Quinn Evans is working to reduce total carbon on all our projects. We were an early signatory of the American Institute of Architects (AIA)’s 2030 Commitment and we hold ourselves accountable to our carbon reduction goals by reporting on our progress every year through the 2030 Design Data Exchange (DDx). Since 2021 we have tracked embodied carbon for every project reported to the DDx; we are one of the few firms to do so. Our transformation of the iconic Michigan Central Station preserved over 15,000 tons of embodied carbon while reducing energy usage by one-third. Instead of razing and replacing the structure, we rejuvenated it for the next generation and prepared it for a low-carbon future. As part of the Pre-Forum events of the Buildings and Climate Global Forum hosted by the French Government and UN Environment Programme in Paris this week I attended the workshop: Engaging policy to advance low carbon, resilient communities and quality of life hosted by U.S. Green Building Council , The Enniscorthy Forum, and the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (Whole Life Cycle Policy Coalition). There was a great panel on Policies to Decarbonize Buildings Faster and More Equitably, where we heard from designer Anica Landreneau from the global design firm HOK speak about the evolution of building performance standards for existing buildings as well as highlight that “there is no path to the Paris Agreement without more investment in reusing our existing buildings.” Anica and Alexis Pelosi from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) also highlighted the $1 billion of investment from the US Federal Government for jurisdictions to adopt the latest energy codes and #zerocode, such as the 2021 IECC and its Appendix CC. We also heard from Helena Rivers from the global design firm AECOM that they are now collecting the operational and embodied carbon for all their projects and have a target of a 50% reduction in Whole Life Carbon (WLC) for all their projects. They join the announcements I heard yesterday at the World Green Building Council Building Life event from design firms Ramboll and Arup who are making available their own WLC project data and lessons learned. Nigel Tonks shared that Arup measured and evaluated over 1,400 projects and have published a case study, which includes their methodology and lessons learned. Rikke Bjerregaard Orry from Ramboll announced their launch of an anonymized and filterable database of their 128 projects, as well as their assessment of the various regional and global WLC standards. I applaud the leadership of these global design firms and look forward to learning about the similar efforts of other design firms in measuring and reducing whole life carbon. #BuildForClimate #DesignIsClimateAction #BuildingReuseIsClimateAction Architecture 2030 Lori Ferriss, AIA, PE Kelly Alvarez Doran Lisa Richmond Edward Mazria Kira Gould

The most recent Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction was released last week at the Buildings and Construction Global Forum in Paris. A bit lost within the noise of the Forum, this report is a sobering assessment of our progress towards a #ZeroCarbon #BuiltEnvironment. 📈 📊 The big take-away: We are not on track. Modest decreases in #EnergyUseIntensity were more than offset by an increase in floor area, for yet another year of record high emissions from the buildings sector. 🌲 ☘ New this year: #NatureBasedSolutions. Deep dives into nature and #BiophilicDesign in this year's report reinforce its focus on adaptation and resilience. The report also recognized the #SocialImpact of buildings and #GenderEquity challenges in the construction sector. 🔦 💡 What's missing: #EmbodiedCarbon and #Sufficiency. Indicators tracked by the Global Status Report focus primarily on operating carbon. We know, however, that two things - the volume of new building and the carbon emitted from materials and the construction process - will play an outsized role in achieving (or not) our climate ambitions over the next 3 decades. 🏢 🏠 Our Architecture 2030 team was honored to be among the dozen official reviewers again this year, incorporating comments from Vincent Martinez, Edward Mazria, Julie Hiromoto, FAIA, Kelly Alvarez Doran, Yasemin Kologlu, Pablo La Roche, Prem Sundharam, Andrea Love, AIA, LEED Fellow, Carl Elefante, Anica Landreneau and me, along with Robyn Pender and our colleagues at Climate Heritage Network. AIA|DC and COTED have developed an all-day symposium on Thursday, February 22 called DesignDC 2024: The Climate Crisis and Responsive Design. The built environment generates almost 50% of global CO2 emissions. Architects, engineers, and building owners must work together and commit to net zero emissions by 2030 to reduce the impact on climate change as specified by various climate and decarbonization initiatives. Further, in order to address climate change and decarbonization, policymakers are enacting building performance laws that require buildings to meet certain performance standards. Design professionals are uniquely suited to mitigate help resolve the climate crisis through design, educating clients, and working with navigating policy requirements to advance decarbonization and build greener cities. Panelists include Hub Members Arup @Laura Wingo, HOK Anica Landreneau, and USGBC Sabine Rogers. https://lnkd.in/gt2WdBpk

Thank you for sharing Lisa Richmond 1. We are not on track: Modest improvement in #energy use / #energyefficiency, #electrification substantially offset by #increases in #floor area. We must truly consider what we need rather than striving to own progressively larger #McMansions 2. What's missing: #EmbodiedCarbon and #Sufficiency: the volume of new buildings and associated carbon emitted from materials : construction process needs to be the focus of climate ambitions. We must invest in low carbon materials technologies and #reuse, #recycle, reduce waste and shift to #circulareconomy models. What we #measure gets managed. Universal consistent regulatory measurement of #carbon will give industry the confidence to comprehensively invest in transformation to achieve the circular economy. UN Environment Programme
