Green Marine UK’s hydrogen CTV receives ‘approval in principle’ Green Marine UK’s maritime initiative to retrofit CTVs (crew transfer vessels) with hydrogen, fuel cells, and batteries to cut emissions while servicing offshore wind farms has been granted Approval in Principle (AiP) by the global classification society RINA. Phase 1 of Project Verdant, involving a preliminary design and feasibility study, has now been completed and deemed viable. This opens the door to subsequent project phases seeking to execute design, engineering, and sea trials. Project Verdant aims to retrofit a CTV with hydrogen fuel cells to cut CO2 and NOx emissions while servicing offshore wind farms. Led by Green Marine UK, the Innovate UK-funded project includes maritime consultancy Waves Group and EMEC (European Marine Energy Centre). Project Verdant’s conceptual design incorporates hydrogen fuel cells connected to electric motors. These work in conjunction with existing diesel-fueled engines, which can be shut down to enable zero-emission operation at slow speeds while servicing offshore wind farms. Energys helped design and provided engineering and modeling for the vessel retrofit. Meanwhile, Engineered Marine Systems (EMS) supplied a design for the battery room, drawing from its experience with multiple hybrid CTVs. Findings show the hybrid system could reduce the vessel’s CO2 emissions by up to 30% and NOx emissions by up to 40% – with CTVs commonly operating in loiter mode for long periods at a time. Green Marine UK’s Managing Director Jason Schofield said obtaining AiP was a key objective for Project Verdant, providing confidence in the CTVs’ ability to operate safely in UK waters in accordance with the MCA (Maritime & Coastguard Agency) regulations MGN 664 and RINA Rules Pt C, Ch 1, App 14, Appendix 14 Hydrogen Fuelled Ships. The ultimate mission is to capture sufficient learning from the operation of a retro-fitted vessel to enable Green Marine UK to expand its fleet with new-build zero emissions CTVs and SOVs (service operation vessels).

BAR Technologies has launched new 20m and 24m models of its WindWings sails, which have been designed to save 0.7 tons of fuel per day per wing on average on worldwide routes. The technology, which received independent validation from DNV on its fuel saving capabilities earlier this year, is expected to allow for a broader variety of vessels to make use of wind assisted propulsion, increasing the target fleet size for the sails by almost 50%. The First of Its Kind The “world’s first” e-methanol-fueled service operation vessel (SOV) NB1094's was launched at CEMRE SHIPYARD in Turkey on Saturday, 1 June. Esvagt's pioneering project will change the path of the offshore wind service and support the market in reaching carbon-neutral and environmentally friendly solutions. Powered by batteries and dual fuel and pure methanol engines, capable of sailing on renewable e-methanol produced from wind energy and biogenic carbon, will lead to a yearly emission reduction of approx—4,500 tonnes of CO2. Acting carbon-neutral, NB1094 will make it possible to create a new “green vessel” trend in the operations. This 93-meter-long innovative vessel will provide accommodations for 124 persons and will be built according to DNV classification rules and sails under the Danish flag. The SOV will serve the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Hornsea 2 located off the UK’s Yorkshire coast in the North Sea. Dutch shipbuilder launches groundbreaking electric vessel with unprecedented feature: ‘[It] represents optimal practicality’ - In what’s said to be a world first, a Dutch shipbuilding company has delivered a service operations vessel that can be charged using offshore wind turbines. The SOV 7017 E from Damen Shipyards Group is a maintenance ship for turbines located at sea and is equipped with two battery system options. According to Electrek, these comprise a 15-megawatt-hour arrangement when used at nearly full electric power and a 10-megawatt-hour version when running at 75%. - In a matter of hours, a single turbine can fully recharge the ship, which is 70 meters long (about 230 feet) and has 60 cabins to accommodate its crew and up to 40 technicians, according to Electrek. https://lnkd.in/eRTjT5qX
