Empowering Ontario's Workforce: The Imperative for Training Electric Vehicle (EV) Manufacturing and Maintenance Operators As the world accelerates towards a greener future, Canada and particularly Ontario stand at the vanguard of the EV transformation. Ontario is committed to reducing carbon emissions, fostering sustainable transportation solutions, and becoming a manufacturing EV hub. Therefore, it is imperative prioritizing the training and education of EV Manufacturing and Maintenance operators. A Partnership among Academia, Industry, and Government is required to complete the EV Transformation which has seen more than $30 billion in new investments since 2020. The partners' capabilities: ·      Academia educates highly skilled and creative people through state-of-the-art equipment, labs, simulations, and hands on education. ·      Industry partners bring operational excellence, innovation and latest industry needs. ·      Local governments support sustainable growth and economic development. Positioning Ontario: The Government of Ontario is working hard to “position Ontario as a North American hub for developing and building the car of the future through emerging technologies and advanced manufacturing processes” (Driving Prosperity, 2022 pg .3). Ontario would like to lead in the production of EV and EV battery manufacturing. This initiative requires highly skilled workers. Meeting Industry Demand: The demand for EV is surging, with major automakers committing to electrifying their fleets. As production ramps up, there is a pressing need for skilled workers who can manufacture and assemble EVs efficiently and maintain the fleets. Driving Innovation: EVs represent a paradigm shift in automotive technology, requiring innovative approaches to manufacturing and maintenance. Ensuring Safety and Reliability: Proper training can help mitigate risks and prevent accidents, safeguarding both workers and consumers. Supporting Economic Growth: The transition to electric vehicles presents significant economic opportunities for Ontario, from job creation to the expansion of the green economy. Addressing Climate Change: Perhaps most importantly, the widespread adoption of electric vehicles is essential for mitigating the impacts of climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector. In conclusion, the importance of training and educating manufacturing and maintenance operators for EV cannot be overstated. I have been seeing headlines about the electric vehicle manufacturers cutting production, technology challenges, infrastructure frustration, and talk of an EV market slowdown. The zero-emissions landscape is still unpredictable -- things shift quickly. Commercial technology is very different than that of passenger cars, and it's not going to be easy to bring big industries through the energy transition. It requires lots of investment, innovation and, perhaps most importantly, partnership. Last week, Accelera by Cummins, Daimler Truck North America and PACCAR announced that our joint venture will locate an advanced battery cell factory in Marshall County, Mississippi. Geared at electrifying medium- and heavy-duty trucks, the JV's 21-gigawatt hour plant, which is set to begin production in 2027, will create 2,000 U.S manufacturing jobs. This is not just a headline but a commitment to leading commercial transportation to zero and accelerating the decarbonization of the trucking industry! It will not happen overnight, but it's up to leaders like us to drive momentum, make the investments and develop the solutions that will work. The road ahead will not be without more challenges. 🚌Need an example of how electrifying our school bus fleets helps build new manufacturing capacity and jobs in the clean economy? Thanks to a new nearly $80 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the Blue Bird Corporation will be doing just that — converting an existing plant in Georgia to produce zero emissions buses! Kudos to CEO Phil Horlock, President Britton Smith, Director of Electrification Andy Moore and team! ⚡️ Bird Body Company intends to convert a prior Internal Combustion Engine ("ICE") vehicle manufacturing location to a new 600,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility for the production of zero-emission electric school buses while focusing on the education and training of its current and future workforce. 🛠️This project will integrate automotive related suppliers in the area into the EV production vertical and boost the domestic supply chain of EV components. Also, Blue Bird will work with a local full-service design-build construction firm, providing an additional investment in the construction workforce in Middle Georgia. 👷♀️Blue Bird projects adding more than 400 new, high-paying, and highly skilled jobs; upskilling the current workforce in partnership with the USW in electric vehicle technology.
