Regenstrief Institute President and CEO Dr. Rachel Patzer spoke to students graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay's associate, undergraduate and graduate programs during the university's commencement ceremony. Dr. Patzer is an alumna of UW-Madison. In her speech, Dr. Patzer shared with the graduates four themes that helped her shape who she would become and how each left an indelible mark on her work and personal life. This episode will be part celebration, part reflection, and part insight. We will be celebrating what we learned from 1 year of hosting a live radio show and podcast, and also sharing specific data on a group coaching program that follows the framework that our seasons have been focusing on this past year. We will review our proprietary research-based 5-stage Strategic Leadership Pathway model and the results from a program evaluation study of this model conducted at Duke University School of Medicine and presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting. We'll explore questions such as: 1. What might be the impetus for starting a group coaching program within academic healthcare - what was the need identified and why group coaching? 2. What can you expect to gain from such a program and what are the implications? 3. What impact could this kind of program potentially serve in highly complex academic medicine and healthcare environments in supporting leaders in those environments. Mara Becker, MD, MSCE, is a physician-scientist and Vice Dean for Faculty of Duke University School of Medicine's Office of Faculty. She oversees the Office for Faculty and provides leadership on all faculty matters including advancement, development, mentoring and professionalism. Jessica Schonberg, M.Ed. is their Director of Educational Programs for Duke University School of Medicine's Office of Faculty. She directs and oversees their Leadership and Faculty Development and funding programs. Jessica has a Master's degree in Training and Development from North Carolina State University. Jessica Sperling, Ph.D., is and Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at Duke University, as well as the Director of Applied Research, Evaluation, & Engagement of Duke University's Social Science Research Institute (SSRI). She focuses on responsive and collaborative research, evaluation, and research/practice partnership. The ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council has announced new funding for the London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (LISS DTP) – of which Queen Mary is a key partner. LISS-DTP is led by King's College London in partnership with Queen Mary University of London and Imperial College London. The programme will train the next generation of research leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs who will transform the way social scientists tackle complex problems and global challenges. The new multi-million-pound award, led by Professor Pietro Panzarasa, builds on previous funding awarded to the initiative and will support five cohorts of talented PhD students across the three partner institutions. In total this flagship doctoral research and training programme will equip more than 600 LISS-funded research leaders and innovators with a strong capacity for working across disciplines and sectors and leveraging data to translate social science research into impact. https://lnkd.in/eSU-vRm3

● BETTER TO BE YOUR BEST, THAN BEING THE BEST It's exactly 2 years today [1st December, 2021], I graduated with Masters Degree [MSc] in Public Health from the University of Sunderland. Few weeks to my graduation, I was recognised and recommended as one of the outstanding students, not entirely by grade or academic performance but by little efforts of commitments to being better each time. Hence, I became one of the faces of the university https://lnkd.in/e2gYSKHZ This recognition has gained me so much exposure such that on a monthly basis, I often get messages from students and propective students from different parts of the world seeking various kinds of information and guidance on matters around public health, research, The University, and more. It's from my MSc program that I know a bit of Qualitative Research today, to becoming a coach in this field. Two expert leaders contributed greatly to my academic journey then; My personal tutor who was also the program leader of MSc Public Health during my time Dr. Floor Christie- de Jong and my Dissertation supervisor, Dr Louise Harvey-Golding who is the current program leader of MSc Public Health. You will never remain the same, if you learn under these two leaders 🙂 •••••••••••○○○ Being THE BEST breeds competition, but when your target is at being YOUR BEST, you breed improvement and excellence. While the society has placed everyone in a competitive mode in almost all situations, it never ends well. When your end goal is to outshine and outsmart others, you remain limited. Dr. James Maddirala, UVI Creative Leadership for Innovation and Change, Ph.D. Program Director, invites the community to the public Dissertation Defense for Una Dyer on Wednesday, April 24, 2024  4:00 p.m. AST.      TOPIC :“The Development Of A Composite Leadership Profile Of Presidents Of Historically Black Colleges And Universities: Building A Model For Crisis Leadership”   ABSTRACT   Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have played a vital role in providing educational opportunities and advancing the socioeconomic status of African American students for generations. Despite their profound legacy of achievement, HBCUs face significant vulnerabilities, heightened risks, and disproportionate crises that threaten their viability, relevancy, and sustainability. These crises include economic challenges due to systemic underfunding and resource constraints; reputational setbacks resulting from leadership instabilities and negative media perceptions; distinct vulnerabilities to natural disasters exacerbated by their geographical concentration in areas prone to extreme weather events and negative disaster outcomes; and public health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic that have amplified existing inequities and pervasive campus violence. This qualitative study aimed to explore the essence of the crisis leadership phenomenon in HBCUs by investigating the lived experiences of HBCU presidents during these various crisis situations. Employing a phenomenological approach, this dissertation examined the presidents' leadership styles and decision-making processes within the context of each crisis typology. Fifteen HBCU presidents participated in the study, providing rich, authentic descriptions of their lived experiences. By delving into the unique challenges faced by HBCUs and the multifaceted and complex nature of crisis leadership in these institutions, this study aimed to fill the knowledge gap in the existing literature and contribute to the broader discourse on crisis leadership in higher education institutions, particularly within the context of HBCUs and minority-serving institutions. "Harvard at the Crossroads: The Case for a Dynamic, Diverse Leader" by W J O'Reilly, Write-in Candidate for Overseer As a write-in candidate for Harvard Overseer, I've been closely following the recent developments regarding our university's leadership. With the resignation of former President Claudine Gay, the search for a new leader has become a pivotal moment for the future of Harvard. While some may view the potential hire of interim President Alan Garber as a "safe" choice, I believe it's crucial for us to consider the broader pool of talented and diverse candidates available. Yes, stability is important, but so is dynamism, innovation, and the ability to inspire meaningful change. It's time for Harvard to embrace a leader who can challenge the status quo and bring fresh perspectives to our institution. By looking beyond the "safe" choice, we can ensure that we select the most qualified and dynamic individual to lead us into the future.
