Everybody needs a CFO in their lives - what is it and why? 🤔 What is a CFO? A CFO is a chief financial officer. Their key roles are: ↗️ providing financial direction and accountability 🖇 linking the operational levers to the financial levers of the business so the impact of moving each is known and anticipated before actions are taken 🫣 the soundboard for creative ideas to bring the necessary financial and often non-financial resources together to map things out This is just 3 of the key roles and is why we love it at Tennick Accountants where we are asked to fulfil this role such as with R.E.P.R.E.S.E.N.T and even more fun when we are asked to be a co-founder. 😐 Why does everybody need this? Every business owner to some extent should be offered and hopefully receive this as they need direction to help move their business forward. They need accountability and a sounding board for actions they are taking. Finally; and most importantly, they need the confidence in terms of struggle to see them through, to ensure they enjoy the journey and can exit their business WHEN they want, with WHAT they want, HOW they want.

As a fractional CFO, if there is one key piece of advice I could give business owners and fellow Finance Professionals is KEEP THINGS SIMPLE! Why do I say this? Too many times I have been brought into a business where the owner believes they need all the information under the sun so they can make “informed” decisions. So they hire a controller who through no fault of their own follow the direction of the owner and in their efforts to impress the owner they OVER REPORT! Yes, I have fallen into this trap before! Showing 20 different KPI’s when in reality 5 would do, producing Short, Medium and Long term plans when the company would benefit from a short term plan at present, producing iterations and iterations of forecasts, budgets etc, STOP! This is what that does to a business owner (to name a few): 1. Distraction: with each different report there are items flagged which may not be important but now take up that little space you as the leader had to think. 2. Confusion: with soo many variations of reports there is no consistency and goals and targets move based on what you feel is important from the information you are seeing at the time i.e no direction 3. Misuse of time: going through reams and reams of paper is time consuming and takes you away from what really matters, driving your business as a leader! My advice: 1. STOP what you are doing, take a step back and revisit your personal and business goals - are they being achieved? If not, ask the hard questions. 2. Hire someone who will keep you accountable and challenge you on wanting to know every piece of information so you can make a decision! Their job is to present to you what you need to know based on your goals. 3. SIMPLICITY IS KEY! It’s human nature to think that only overly complicated reports will give you the answer! They will after hours and hours of trying to make sense of it! But most of the time the same conclusions can be made from a 2 page report than a 50 page report - it all depends on whether points 1 and 2 above are clear and that person truly understands the direction you want to take your business.
