Coach Alyssa started working with us in 2022 as a Tennis Coach at our Sports Hubs programming. She has since worked with us at summer camp, recess, after school, and sports enrichment programs throughout the year. Q: What do you love most about working at Kids in the Game? A: When the kids are creating art or playing new activities, I love to watch their excitement and happiness because I'm enabling them to have fun. Q: What is your favorite memory from working at Kids in the Game? A: The last day of camp, when an older camper gave me a letter stating that I had made her summer better and that I was her favorite camp counselor, has to be my favorite memory. I knew I had done everything in my power to ensure that every camper had a fantastic day, so it was a wonderful feeling. Q: What have you learned from working with Kids in the Game? A: I learned that it's acceptable to voice your opinions when things doesn't feel right, and to not be afraid to I have concepts for brand-new games. Toronto, New York - DeMontis and McGregor team up to launch first-of-its-kind accessibility training program for sports brands and properties This season, Mark DeMontis and Tyler McGregor are hitting the road and on a mission to educate, promote and engage with sports leaders around the business benefits of accessibility in the sports and entertainment industry. DeMontis, the founder of Canadian Blind Hockey and McGregor, captain of Canada's National Para Hockey Team, are no strangers to accessibility after facing adversity as teens. For DeMontis it was sight-loss and for McGregor, an amputation. Their lived and professional experiences in sports and business have helped them cross paths with a clear purpose, to rethink what it means to be a fan with a disability. DeMontis and McGregor aim to work with leagues, teams and executives to understand how to capitalize on accessibility to better connect with fans who have disabilities. They are offering customizable accessibility training camps in 2024 which will focus on incorporating inclusion and the positive return on investment that comes with increasing accessibility. An estimated 25 to 30% of an average consumer base are people with disabilities. Sports Accessibility is making the argument that fans with disabilities inside the business of sports and entertainment are no different and is an enormous untapped market. The recent decision by the United Nations General Assembly to designate June 11 as the #InternationalDayofPlay is a significant occasion that deserves our attention and celebration. This is a global accent of the fundamental right of child to play. Play and recreation are essential components of a child's growth journey. Research tells us that play fosters creativity, imagination, self-confidence, and various skills across physical, social, cognitive, communication, and emotional domains. Organisations like The LEGO Foundation the LEGO Group and VVOB among others deserve special credit for contributing to the recognition of this important day and championing #PlayMatters. Reflecting on my own experiences, I recall how exciting my primary school days were, particularly at St. Augustine's Demonstration School in Butiiti. The school leaders were intentional by making play not just a break from academics but a powerful tool for learning and growth. Whether it was building structures with paper cuttings, immersing ourselves in imaginative role-play scenarios or collaboratively solving puzzles, every activity was a gateway to deeper understanding and discovery. Play strengthened the bond between the teachers and us students. It nurtured mutual respect and a sense of camaraderie that enhanced the overall learning experience. A global conference about ‘Revolutionising Education Through Play’ Nonsense! We need more STEM! Play has done nothing for society! ‘Revolutionising Education Through Play’ may seem like a grandiose statement, but having spoken with our wonderful guests, we think it's entirely appropriate. Professor Emer Ring and Dr Lisha O'Sullivan should give us hope that the education system some of us struggled in is now being ‘revolutionised’ for learners globally. And while we’re at it, let's get grandiose and ancestral and consider ‘Revolutionising Society Through Play’. Look back through human history. Play has always been a fundamental aspect of society. From ancient civilisations using games to teach important skills and values, to indigenous cultures integrating play into rituals and ceremonies, the role of play in shaping societal norms, values, and behaviours cannot be overstated. Therefore, ‘Revolutionising Education Through Play’ inevitably leads to revolutionising society through play, as it influences how children and adults create, connect and contribute meaningfully to their communities and local ecology. I am certainly not the best LinkedIn user for various reasons, but two days ago was the #InternationalDayofPlay, and I just felt I had to share a few thoughts about something that has become super important to me. At my previous job workplace with Stupid Studio, I spent two amazing years working together with the Playful Schools Network and helped organise the Playful Schools Conference 2023. During this time, I met some of the most innovative educators who are changing the way we think about traditional education by putting play at the center. Here just a few examples: - Western Quebec School (Canada) with David McFall: During COVID, they moved all their lessons outdoors, making it key part of their identity. - Metro Deaf School (Minnesota) with Susan Lane-Outlaw & AnnMarie Thomas: They have done incredible work using play to meet the different learning needs of each kid. - Agora School (Netherlands) with Rob Perrée & Rob Houben: A school with no schedules or classrooms, where the focus is on learning rather than teaching. The school we all wish we could have attended! - International School of Billund (Denmark) with Camilla Uhre Fog & Idah Khan O'Neill: This school is a fantastic example of integrating play into the curriculum, with kids excelling at asking questions and exploring the world around them. ...And these are just a few of the many schools dedicated to making play a vital part of education. This experience really opened my eyes to something crucial: Why are we sticking to old-school methods when we see the negative impact on young people's mental health? Why are we still not good at designing an education that fosters empathy, confidence, critical thinking, and community spirit? 🌟 It's the very first International Day of Play! 🌟 As an educator and school leader myself, I've seen firsthand how play transforms young minds. Remember those days when you couldn't focus unless learning felt like an adventure? That was me! It was only through stories, games, and hands-on activities that I truly engaged in school. And let's not forget those late evenings playing hide and seek or creating epic indoor adventures with friends. Why is play so crucial? 🤔 Because it's not just about fun—it's about developing resilience, leadership, and creativity. Did you know? 1. 71% of children say play is important because it makes them happy, and 58% say that it helps them make friends and have a good time with others. 2. It is estimated that 160 million children around the world are working instead of playing or learning. 3. Only 1 in 4 children play out regularly on their street compared their grandparents generation where almost three-quarters said they played outside a few times a week. 4. 41% of children had been told to stop playing out by either their parents or other adults such as neighbours.
