Yesterday we took the opportunity to upgrade photos for our website. I have never used a professional cinematographer before (not just a mere photographer!) to take photos as I previously did what so many of us do, use our hitech phones. As someone I knew personally, they were a little reluctant to charge for the photos taken as they felt that a professional photographer would do a better job! They just wanted to do me a favour and help out as I have done for them in the past. On arrival, my suggested location inside was dismissed due to poor lighting and very quickly the space chosen was in the garden of our office meet-up. I had never appreciated how tricky it is to get the right light, the kit needed plus expecting all of us to happily look the same way with our eyes open, particularly when you add a dog that really dislikes having their picture taken. I think the end result looks good but please ignore the fact I am on my knees, it's a usual position when you work in recruitment! Doing this made me appreciate the reason why you should engage professionals in your business be that recruiters, developers, 3rd party suppliers etc. Yes, it can cost more than you think to use expertise, but sadly in life you often get what you pay for. As a company, we are much better value than so many recruiters but we do offer years of recruitment experience to hopefully deliver the best person for your business. The increased need for cultural spaces to maximise income generation means organisations have to get very clever about how they use their spaces (with the assistance of designers, and by listening to their operational teams). Of course there is the additional age old problem of where do you hide/store everything which provides quite a headache.

Did this talented Spanish street artist create this wonderful painting in just over 1 minute? No, he did not. Well he did... but he didn't.... let me explain what I mean... This guy has probably spent years and years perfecting his skills and ability to now be able to create these particular pieces of art so quickly. In addition to the natural talent this guy probably already had, it's probably taken him thousands of attempts, using different colour mixes, different techniques, different applications of pressure, different movements, over the years to get it to the point where he can produce such an impressive result in such a speedy way. And wow, what an impressive result it is! Something similar can be said for recruitment. And no... I'm not saying recruiters are artists before anyone mocks me! haha. What I mean is, when a recruiter is asked by a client to find a candidate with a particular skillset and experience, a seasoned and experienced recruiter can submit an excellently matched profile to the clients needs often within 24 hours. Is that because it's an easy job and anyone can do it? No... it's because, just like this artist, the recruiter has harnessed his skills over the years, learned the best places to look, learned the best approaches to make, made mistakes, learnt from mistakes, used different techniques, built huge networks by talking to thousands of candidates over the years, and can now produce what the client is looking for very quickly. So if anyone ever thinks to themselves, after a recruiter produces a good candidate so quickly, "well that didn't take long, what am I paying this fee for".... the answer is; it did not take the recruiter 24 hours to find your perfect candidate, it took years and years! ;) #recruitment #talent #skills

It's funny--there are things out there I would apply to, but you know what I'm not doing? Updating my Resume. I'm not too busy to be interested in opportunities that seem interesting to me, but I am too busy to make you a pretty, specialized first-level package about me that you could more easily get from a vetting service or an AI agent, or my website. My employment history? It's all here. My CV? That's at JoeCallan.com. My 'character'? You have vetting companies that specialize in that. If you're not thinking beyond a resume, using an AI to first-level vet me, or (may the Gods of the job market help you,) going on collegiate merit, I can promise you that your company is missing the best minds in this country--and I'm probably not talking about me. In the age of partisan political hypersensitivity, pander posting, "vibes" marketing bros flooding all levels, and shooting a dart gun at random and hitting a "life-coach", authenticity and fearlessness toward pragmatic problem-solving should be your measures. A live interview should tell you 85% of what you need to know, bearing technical supplements in mind where they apply. If you're selecting from the people droll enough to make it through an application process that looks the same now as it did 25 years ago, and you STILL want a resume at the end of 20 pages of nonsense that tell you nothing about a candidate--information that your $10Mln-1Tln valuation company could snatch from the ether--I wish you all the best of luck. There's no talent shortage: you're probably not looking hard enough. For what it's worth: The best interviewing process I've been a part of in 25 years was probably Wolters Kluwer (It was 2016, and I didn't get the job! 😅) Over that same 25 years, the best INTERNAL interview/promotion process I've ever been a part of was at FedEx.

In the FMCG and Automotive industry it is normal for managers to move onto new roles every 3 years. During that time they might take on new tasks or activities, achieve new goals and complete new projects. This is most often displayed in their CV, LinkedIn profile and page and yet the photo that they might have had taken 4-5 years ago stays the same. I have seen lots of young professionals who despite having worked hard, completed many new projects and been committed to advancing their career still have their Graduation portrait from university as their Profile photo. They are need to show that the experience and expertise they have gained correlates to the image they are showing of themselves. This also applies to to more senior management who have moved from one company to another and the branded background of the office wall does not relate to their present position. For some people every 12 months they need to have a fresh portrait to represent the new position they are in. How many companies still use the photo that was taken of their employees when they started 5 years later? Does your company profile photo new updating? Do you still have a University Graduation portrait as your profile image and yet your work experience tells a different story? Here's what the clash visually looks like when a creative spirit is doing a desk job - A memoir: I studied design tech, art textiles, dance, and fashion styling. I’ve enjoyed the vocational subjects & have always been a visual learner. If I can't make a decision, I mix all the options together, like the colours of my nails, for example. Working at a desk means my creative passions can remain hobbies. Luckily, my boss doesn't mind if my dress has a clashing print, bright polka dots, or if I have a hint of pink in my hair. The jargon for one has been a minefield. But, after 5 years, I've grasped it. I've learned a lot about financial products that schools should teach. I love my job because I talk to many interesting people. They teach me new things every day. That's why this job suits me, and it's stuck around. I don’t think anyone leaves school thinking, ‘I want to be a recruiter.' Recruitment absolutely picked me… At the office, it's a blend of me and the suits... and it works.
