🚶♂️ 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞 - Reza Esmaillie and I met at btS – Life Sciences Studierendeninitiative e.V. during our PhDs, where we organized events for PhDs to help them find their career path, and, to be honest, to pimp our CV 😄 🔬 𝐀 𝐟𝐞𝐰 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫, we are back together at a btS event in our new positions as founder of Detechgene (Reza) and Innovation Scout (me) to speak about the topic of founding a start-up in the field of life sciences. 🎓 𝐀𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 since we finished our PhDs, the academic system still makes it tremendously difficult for PhDs to figure out what they would like to do next when they decide against the academic career path. 💡 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 that we discussed on Wednesday: ▪ Attend and network at events outside your academic bubble ▪ Follow up afterwards on LinkedIn ▪ Ask for advice or help (trust me, most people will happily offer help!) ▪ Go for opportunities: Your first job after your PhD may not be your dream job, and that's okay. Trying different roles is essential to figure out what you enjoy, and it's perfectly fine to switch jobs. 🌍 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 here in the region, organized by btS – Life Sciences Studierendeninitiative e.V., Gateway Excellence Start-up Center University of Cologne , BIO.NRW, Cluster Medizin.NRW, chemstars.nrw, ChemCologne, BioRiver, BioCampus Cologne and many more where you can attend for free and easily get in touch with friendly people outside the academic bubble that are happy to be part of your network. ⏰ 𝐈 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐲 to free up time to attend these events, but, (𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘗𝘐𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴), it is for your future, and the Western blot or qPCR can wait until tomorrow 😉 🙏 Thank you, Eva Hoffmann, for inviting us and for organizing such events next to your busy PhD life. Really appreciate it 😊 #AcademicNetworking #CareerDevelopment #ProfessionalDevelopment #STEMCareers #ScienceEvents

Machine Learning & AI Technologist | Infosys Ph.D. Student | Founder isscholar.com, decentrapress.com | (ACE, A+, CISSP, MSCE)
Finally, I survived my first week as a PhD student. It’s been a super busy week with tons of tasks to complete. From getting through my immigration basics, sorting out my medicals, opening a US bank account, getting a US line, attending a long list of orientations, activating my student ID, making cool new friends on campus, sorting out my GA, learning my way around the campus, sorting out my documentation, staying healthy and surviving in between. Nothing prepares you for the journey ahead. In between, I’m totally clueless about what I’m doing. I’m just trying to figure things out as I progress through these hurdles. PhD is no joke – most times you are expected to figure things out yourself. The purpose of this blog is to document my journey so someone reading it will find it easier to navigate. It doesn’t matter what field you are in; I will try to make it neutral for everyone. My advice is once you are on campus, ask a lot of questions and be shameless about it. No one will hold your hand through this journey – you are expected to figure things out yourself. I’m not claiming to be an expert in this – in fact, I’m still clueless. As a first-year PhD student, there are several platforms you should consider registering on to enhance your academic journey, manage your research, and connect with the academic community. Here are some key platforms and tools you might find useful: https://lnkd.in/dMptbQWh
