How not to answer the interview question "Tell me a bit about yourself"... 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 "Well, it all started in 1994 in New Mexico, where I was the 3rd child in a family of 5....I was always interested in science, and even though I loved bike riding and baseball, I decided one day to enroll in a science fair....(35 minutes later), and that's how I got here today." Some people might find that story interesting, but I can promise you that this is not what the hiring manager was asking for. It won't help you get the job. 𝗗𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 Spend 90-120 seconds talking about 3 career highlights or accomplishments. Have those highlights relate directly to the things that the role says are requirements. That's it. Seriously. 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀? We'll go through that in the Trulitica Life Science Biotech Careers Course. 👉Presale begins Feb 05 for $175 👉Course Launches on March 15 Click here to learn more: https://lnkd.in/greSKCTY #biotechnology, #careers

Reflecting on my journey post-graduation in 2021, I embarked on the quest for job opportunities, eager to apply my skills and knowledge gained from university. However, a recurring obstacle emerged – the requirement for a mandatory one-year service with the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC). Despite my active involvement in work since 2020, this prerequisite persisted. In 2023, having completed my national service, I eagerly resumed my job hunt, only to encounter a new challenge: the demand for experienced professionals. Undeterred, I persisted, leveraging my accumulated five years of diverse experience. Yet, the latest setback baffles me. Recently, during a promising interview, I faced the disheartening reality that my extensive experience outside the pharmaceutical industry rendered me ineligible. Despite meeting all other criteria – education, skills, and a commendable CV – my lack of pharmaceutical industry experience was deemed insurmountable. This predicament prompts a crucial question: how does one gain industry-specific experience when opportunities seem exclusively reserved for those who already possess it? I share this not as a plea for sympathy, but rather as a call for reflection and dialogue. How can we bridge this experience gap for passionate professionals eager to contribute their talents, regardless of industry-specific background? Let's start a conversation and explore innovative solutions to empower individuals like myself to break through these barriers and contribute meaningfully to diverse industries.

According to reports, the most selective consulting firms hire 1-3% of applicants. 😬 Data shows that having a senior professional in your network yields the strongest career results, but #firstgen students' networks are inherently limited--at first. Many of us found in our own recruiting experiences that our target companies were actively investing in recruiting and retaining first generation talent, and that people like us were more than happy to share insights and guidance along the way. This week we hosted our second summer "check-in" with the incoming class of first generation MBA candidates at the University of Notre Dame - Mendoza College of Business. We pulled back the curtain on networking, answering questions about: why network, how to network, who to target, and how to tell your first generation story. See below for the slide deck (including real-life examples of networking emails, agendas, and pitches) and share your own advice in the comments. 🍀

Academic Escape & Career Clarity Coach for PhDs | Job Search & Career Educator | Keynote Speaker & Workshop Facilitator | Online Community Builder
PhDs want jobs where they feel valued and respected by their colleagues. Who doesn't? You thought an academic work environment would give you the freedom, autonomy, and flexibility you desired. But it turns out that while you in theory have a lot of independence, in practice you're overburdened with teaching, research, or administrative work you can never seen to get a break from. Instead of feeding your soul, this career is eating away at your physical, mental, and financial wellbeing. Money is important, and these measly cost of living adjustments aren't cutting it. You're falling further and further behind where you want to be. Meanwhile, your colleagues are leaving for other positions or retiring and their lines aren't being replaced. Staff are overworked too. So you're doing more and more for less and less. Does any of this resonate with your experience? These are the kinds of realities my professor clients experience, and why they start working with me by joining the PhD Career Clarity Program. I'm grateful for their trust in me, to help guide them toward better options and support them as they apply, interview, and negotiate their way into great-fit roles elsewhere. If you'd like to learn more about my approach to the job search for professors, postdocs, and other PhDs who are ready to leave academia, you can start with my free training. This is an 80-minute video you can watch anytime >>>https://lnkd.in/gthPbZdN For more details on the 6-month self-paced program with regular live coaching and workshops, visit this page >>> https://lnkd.in/gkn_chSt
