Excuse me, The PRSA Foundation… but $130,000 in relation to *what*? The Better Business Bureau’s “standard seeks to assure donors that the majority of a charity’s activities (defined as 65% of a charity’s total expenses in the past fiscal year) are directed to its program services.” Transparency is not the PRSA Foundation’s forte. Consequently, this GuideStar link to the Foundation’s IRS Form 990 filing (2021) from two years ago is the most recent one we have documenting the Foundation’s % of expenses actually dedicated to its stated “diversity” mission. In 2021, only 41% ($60,913) of total expenses ($146,700) were dedicated to grants / scholarships. In 2020, only 23% ($65,506) of total expenses ($277,233) were thus dedicated. “Other” expenses are largely used to prop up the PRSA, Inc., business league, which lost well into the seven figures in member dollars for the same time period. When I asked questions in 2020 of CFO Philip Bonaventura and then-Foundation President Joe Cohen about what was going on, I was stonewalled for months and then retaliated against. On Day One of the Little Black Dress Initiative, we’re spotlighting Junior League of The Woodlands’ efforts in addressing education and literacy gaps. Did you know, in neighborhoods surrounding Title I Schools, only one book is available for every 300 children, compared to an average of 12 books for more affluent peers? This contributes to 70% of fourth-grade students from under-resourced environments with access to appropriate learning materials. Keys to Learning, a JLTW initiative, focuses on boosting access to books and educational resources for elementary school-aged children, emphasizing literacy and STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math) for youth development. Your donation makes a real impact. In 2023, Keys to Learning distributed over 464 books at their annual Literacy Carnival. A small $20 donation puts five books in the hands of local elementary children. All funds raised help tackle poverty issues like literacy in our community. Today is giving Tuesday, "a day that encourages people to do good" - consider donating to a charity in your own community. 5 tips when donating: 1. Make a list of the issues you care about - think about challenges you'd like to help overcome 2. Use your household budget to decide how much to give 3. Donate to a mix of charities - you may want to give to both a small, local organization and a large, national or international organization 4. Beware of charity scammers- make sure your money is going to the people who you're trying to help 5. Money is not the only way to support charity - Volunteering is a great way to give back

All 102 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's) together have an endowment of USD 4 b. Harvard's endowment alone is USD 50 b. So, this USD 100 m donation will be put together in a pooled endowment for HCBU's. This will become part of a USD 370 m pooled endowment. Pooled investments allow for better investments and grow more quickly. HCBU's will only be able to take a small percentage out every year so that the endowment can keep growing. HBCU's have been increasingly important as affirmative action gets struck down and the backlash against EDI. https://lnkd.in/g_sEJXhb

As we (The New Philanthropists) get ready for our 2024 Board Mentors of Color programing, we're excited to release a new report in collaboration with Measure. Check out the story on Axios... "The best way to combat historical imbalances in nonprofit leadership is with mentor programs and transparent board recruitment processes, per a report to be released today by an Austin organization. Driving the news: The report, "Breaking Barriers: Bridging the Nonprofit Board Representation Gap," examines a cycle in which existing board members tend to recruit individuals similar to themselves. It was conducted by Measure, an Austin-based research and data firm, for The New Philanthropists. By the numbers: Since 2019, TNP has had more than 200 mentees and more than 40 mentors participate in its Board Mentors of Color Program, which supports leaders of color in navigating Austin nonprofit boards." https://lnkd.in/gtKh9uh2
