Achieving the Paris Agreement goals will not be possible without transforming the buildings and construction sector. 💠 The Buildings and Construction sector currently accounts for 21% of global greenhouse gas emissions. 💠 Half of the buildings standing in 2050 have not yet been built: The equivalent of Paris is added in floor space every 5 days and that of Japan every year until 2060. 💠 The climate impact of buildings is likely to increase in the coming decades due to rapid growth, especially in urban areas in the Global South. For example, 70% of the buildings projected to exist in 2040 in Africa have not yet been built. 💠 Yet, the buildings and construction sector is not on track to achieve decarbonization by 2050. 💠 In 2021, the buildings and construction sector accounted for around 37% of energy-related CO2 emissions and over 34% of energy demand globally. We were privileged to co-host a compelling webinar with Morocco Green Building Council titled "Flow of Knowledge: Emirates Green Building Council and MoroccoGBC Uniting for Water Sustainability in the MENA Region." 🌍 This webinar was graced by the presence of Mr.  Khaled Bushnaq, the Chairman of Emirates Green Building Council. In honor of World Water Day, observed on March 22nd, the Emirates Green Building Council and Morocco Green Building Council collaborated to shed light on water sustainability issues. The webinar focused on addressing local, regional, and global water challenges, exploring potential solutions and regulatory frameworks, and underscoring the economic benefits of sustainable water infrastructure. It also underscored the pivotal role of GBCs in advancing overall built environment sustainability, with a particular emphasis on water management. 🎤 Our panelists, distinguished experts from various fields, brought their insights and expertise to the discussion. Forbes Tower ( zero carbon emissions) Administrative Capital of Egypt 🇪🇬 The goal is for these buildings to have a net-zero or even net-negative carbon footprint over their lifetime, from construction to operation to end-of-life. Zero-carbon buildings are a crucial part of the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon built environment. Many countries and cities are now setting targets for all new buildings to be zero-carbon by 2030 or 2050.
