❗Want to know more about methane slip from LNG shipping ❓🚢💨 Join the webinar on FUMES, the largest ever study on methane emissions from LNG ships conducted by partners ICCT, Explicit ApS and TNO: 👇👇👇
Do #methane emissions from ships fueled by liquefied natural gas (#LNG) present a higher climate risk than officials assume? 🛳️ 🌍 💬 On 14 March, we are organizing a #webinar to discuss our results from real-world methane emissions from ships powered by LNG. Bryan Comer, Jörg Beecken, and Robin Vermeulen will present the findings of the #FUMES project, an ICCT collaboration with Explicit ApS and the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). The project collected the most comprehensive dataset of real-world methane emissions from LNG-fueled ships to date, including methane slip from marine engines and fugitive methane emissions from LNG cargo unloading operations. The investigation concluded that real-world methane emissions from the most common LNG-fueled marine engine averaged 6.4%, whereas EU regulations assume 3.1% and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) assumes 3.5%. The session will include a Q&A with the authors. Join us! 🗓 14 March 🕑 14:30 CET Registration is open: https://lnkd.in/eVXQ-RHK #methaneslip #climate #shipping #LNG

From an LNG perspective, it was positive to see the International Maritime Organization approving new Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) for Canada and Norway’s Arctic waters at its recent Marine Environment Protection Committee meeting, MEPC 80. These are set for adoption at the next MEPC meeting in October. As reported by Ship & Bunker, the Canadian Arctic ECA will cover nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions such as black carbon, while the Norwegian Sea ECA will cover NOx and SOx. The new ECAs build on previous IMO rules that will see the Mediterranean become an ECA as of May 1, 2025. LNG as a marine fuel emits virtually zero SOx and PM emissions and reduces NOx emissions by up to 95%. Removing these harmful local emissions improves air quality for crew, passengers and coastal residents. The need to reduce the carbon footprint of sea going vessels and the serious concerns about the threat of air pollution and the contributions of global maritime industry to poor air quality have clearly defined the necessity for the use of LNG as a transitional bunker fuel for greener shipping. Following the 40% GHG reduction target for 2030 as set by IMO, shipping firms that take positive strategic actions in this direction may likely position to reap the benefits of corporate reputation, increasd revenues, customer satisfaction, unrestricted operational areas, green financing from banks/investors, new technology transfer, personnel retention, etc. While government regulators, organisations, and all maritime stakeholders aggressively seek cleaner, more sustainable and more environmentally friendly shipping, Shipowners should be properly advised in the choice of appropriate bunkers for their fleet through the provision of right information and accurate data.

LNG consolidates its leading position as alternative marine fuel. The question that arise is, Will be room for hydrogen and ammonia in the maritime sector? I will contribute as speaker at the #americanlngforum organised by ALJ Group Events to discuss this and other topics. #americanlngforum.

There is a need for LNG in Europa an Asia - but instead of filling the gap from the decline in import of Russian Natural Gas, there is a need to lower the use of gas overall. Biden has delayed the controversial CP2 Louisiana LNG export project. This gives a chance - a needed chance - to reconsider the investment. Its a global responsibility to meet the #ParisAgreement. Low-carbon economies start with reducing needs for natural gas and secure a livable planet for future generations. Last year we proposed this plan for reducing the natural gas dependency in Europe as part of #REPowerEU: https://lnkd.in/eY23whTd #ClimateAction #SustainableEnergy #BidenAdministration #LNG #EnergyTransition #RenewableEnergy #EnvironmentalPolicy Euroheat & Power European Parliament European Commission

The Biden Administration is set to delay an important LNG project under the guise of reviewing the DoE's permitting process and "downstream climate impacts" of the LNG industry. This threatens not only the Venture Global LNG #CP2 project but a host of other LNG facilities proposed to be built in the U.S. Furthermore, during a time of vast global instability, this stunts our #energydiplomacy and ability to project #geopolitical strength through our American energy resources. Looking forward to discuss this and much more #energypolicy with friends at the upcoming NAPE Expo LP!

Shipping is a multi-billion dollar industry. With a tsunami of regulation hitting the sector, the race is on to find a fuel that is compliant but also suitable for the vast fleets that service our every day needs. LNG is hardly the new kid on the block but I spoke to Steve Esau, COO of SEA-LNG, about the fuel's feasibility to power the lifeblood of the global economy https://lnkd.in/eN_Ug5T2

SEA-LNG’s annual ‘A View from the Bridge’, a review of the uptake of LNG as a marine fuel in 2023 and its outlook for continued expansion in 2024, is now available. At the International Maritime Organization in July, the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80) adopted a revised GHG Strategy to significantly curb GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions from international shipping. The new targets include a 20% reduction in emissions by 2030, a 70% reduction by 2040 (compared to 2008 levels), and the ultimate goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. LNG is currently the most viable and practical solution for the decarbonisation of the maritime industry. According to DNV - Maritime, as of December 2023, there are 469 LNG-fuelled ships – excluding LNG carriers – in operation, with a further 537 on order. DNV predicts that by the end of 2027, over 1,000 LNG fuelled ships will be carrying goods around the world with reduced emissions. This compares to only 36 LNG-fuelled vessels in operation a decade ago. According to Clarksons, some 188 ports offer LNG bunkering services, with a further 82 bunkering locations decided and implementing plans, or under active discussion. The number of LNG bunker vessels has grown to 50, with a further 34 on order or under discussion. LNG offers a practical and realistic pathway to zero-emissions for shipping. LNG offers immediate greenhouse gas reductions of up to 23% and the lowest cost of compliance with European and IMO regulations. Bio-LNG, which can be dropped in to existing LNG engines and infrastructure, has the lowest production costs of all alternative marine fuels and is increasingly available. And e-LNG will have similar availability and cost issues as other hydrogen-based products. The Biden administration recently announced a pause on approving new liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminals, a move that has been, according to this article, applauded by both climate activists and some manufacturers. 🙌 LNG exports have been a contentious issue for years, as they have the potential to both increase domestic natural gas prices, the volatility of those prices, and contribute to global greenhouse gas emissions. 🌎Many U.S. manufacturers that require natural gas for its energy needs are supportive of the pause. However, LNG is a low carbon bridge fuel that allows developing countries to avoid reliance on higher emitting fossil fuels like coal and oil. The pause will allow the administration to study the impacts of LNG exports on the economy, the environment, and the public interest. Some of the key questions they will examine are: ☑ How do LNG exports affect domestic natural gas supply and demand, and consequently, prices and reliability for consumers and industries? 💰 ☑How do LNG exports affect the U.S. and global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet the goals of the Paris Agreement? 🌡️ ☑How do LNG exports affect the health and well-being of communities near the export terminals and along the pipelines? 🏘️ What do you think of this pause? Do you support or oppose LNG exports? Share your thoughts in the comments. 👇 #LNG #Biden #ClimateAction #EnergyPolicy #NaturalGas #energytransition #ConsumerWelfare #Innovation #Futurism #Economics #Manufacturing https://lnkd.in/gG3h9EvM
