About us

SEA-LNG is a multi-sector industry coalition established to demonstrate LNG’s benefits as a viable marine fuel. We fully believe in the benefits of LNG and have been working diligently to bring about a positive and pragmatic change – driving the widespread adoption of LNG as a leading marine fuel and helping to reduce emissions for the shipping industry. Founded in 2016, with numerous high-profile members including shipping companies, ports, LNG suppliers, bunkering companies, infrastructure providers and OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), classification societies, banks and brokers, SEA-LNG is a multi-sector industry coalition whose members work together to demonstrate the benefits of LNG as a marine fuel throughout the entire value chain. We do this by commissioning and communicating independent research on topics including the emissions, investment and infrastructure cases for LNG. OUR MISSION The global shipping industry faces unprecedented challenges as environmental regulations tighten. Shipping needs an alternative to oil-based fuels. We’re here to help. LNG provides an answer to these challenges now and in the future. LNG is the only commercially viable and scalable alternative marine fuel that can enable the shipping industry to remain competitive while phasing-out of emissions this century. We work with our Members to demonstrate the environmental, commercial and operational benefits of LNG as a marine fuel and the role it can play in transforming the shipping industry in the 21st century. We facilitate a global LNG marine fuel value chain that enables the transition to sustainable shipping – moving towards a cleaner future.

Congratulations to SEA-LNG members Shell and ZIM Integrated Shipping Services on the first bunkering operation of the ZIM Mount Vinson! 👏    The company used the Progress bunker vessel to deliver to ZIM’s 15,000 TEU boxship at the Port of Savannah last week. The ship subsequently bunkered the CMA CGM Symi this week. The bunker vessel – the largest Jones Act LNG bunker barge – was delivered earlier this month.    The supply infrastructure to support LNG as a marine fuel continues to grow. It can now be delivered to vessels in some 185 ports, including most of the main bunkering ports, with a further 50 ports in the process of facilitating LNG bunkering investments and operations by 2025.    LNG bunkering infrastructure can be used to supply net-zero emissions fuels in the form of liquefied biomethane or liquefied e-methane, with little or no modification, enabling the transition to a decarbonised shipping industry.    Read more via Ship & Bunker: https://lnkd.in/gcE_Vqdw     #LNG #Decarbonisation #ShipsAndShipping

Is LNG a viable option for the liner sector? Lloyd's Register thinks so! According to LR’s Chief Commercial Officer Andrew McKeran, the LNG pathway is “unique in terms of diversification against risk” for the containership sector. Andy highlights four distinct pathways for the boxship segment to take full advantage of fuel: Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is bolstered by LNG as it emits less carbon and is cleaner to burn, and therefore easier to handle in the capturing process and has better compatibility with precombustion technologies. It is the “best option for onboard CCS applications” Liquified e-methane “ticks all the right boxes on GHGs, climate, and decarbonisation”, is supported by a global supply chain and LNG availability, and can quickly scale without new infrastructure costing billions Liquified biomethane (bio-LNG) is “cleanest and cheapest type of biofuel and does not compete with food or land use.” It can reduce emissions by 80% compared to marine diesel on a full well-to-wake basis Methane slip is a recognised challenge which industry is well on the way to solving. According to Andy, effective methane abatement technology is being introduced across the LNG pathway supported by industry initiatives such as MAMII and the GREEN RAY project. It’s clear that for the liner sector, LNG as a marine fuel offers a low risk, incremental pathway via biomethane and e-methane to become a net-zero GHG emissions fuel for 2050 and beyond, utilising existing LNG bunkering infrastructure and proven, safe shipboard technology. We’re back with another fact of the week to separate the liquified e-methane facts from fiction. Today turning our attention to the future potential of e-methane. So, what is the potential for liquified e-methane in the future for the maritime industry?    Supplies of liquefied e-methane are potentially unlimited, dependent on the build-out of renewable electricity and hydrogen electrolysis capacity. Liquefied e-methane has the advantage over other green marine fuels in that it can be delivered using existing natural gas and bunkering infrastructure.     Liquefied e-methane is fully interchangeable with natural gas and biogas. This means that it can be transported through trucks, ships, pipelines – and directly used in assets currently running on natural gas or biogas. There is no need to build new ships, transportation, storage and bunkering infrastructure. This gives e-methane a 10-year head-start or more.    To download our e-methane fact sheet, visit our website:👇     https://lnkd.in/ewKATwaf    #shipsandshipping #LNG #decarbonisation
