  • #TBT to this week's insightful dinner debate at the European Parliament, hosted by the European Energy Forum! The focus was on #PublicAcceptance in RES and clean transition projects, with Tsvetelina Penkova, EEF President, chairing the discussion.   🗣️ Pauline Lucas, Euroheat & Power's Policy Director, shared key insights on how DHC systems can foster greater public understanding and support for renewable energy and decarbonisation projects at the local level.   💡 Did you know that connecting to a #DHC network not only protects households from the volatility of fossil fuel markets but also shields them from the high upfront costs of upcoming legislation like ETS2? This makes the clean heat transition more affordable for consumers. With 43% of its energy already decarbonised and growing, DHC also improves building energy performance, helping meet EPBD requirements.   DHC systems do more than provide heating and cooling - they integrate heating and cooling solutions into urban planning, connecting utilities, local authorities, industries, and citizens to create more efficient and sustainable local energy systems.   And here's the best part: 𝐃𝐇𝐂 𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 😎. Powered by homegrown energy sources like waste heat, geothermal, and solar thermal, DHC strengthens EU industry and also creates local jobs, all while supporting Europe’s energy independence!   A big thank you to the European Energy Forum, Tsvetelina Penkova and the European Parliament for providing this important platform, and to all the participants for their valuable contributions! 🙌

Just back from Rome, where I had the opportunity to speak at the Italian Geothermal Forum – and what made it even more special is that it was my first time speaking at an event in my hometown 😁 . 🇮🇹 As a panelist, I discussed the immense potential of #geothermal energy in the district heating and cooling sector, a game-changer for Europe’s decarbonization journey and an inspiration for Italy’s energy future. 🌱 Here are some key takeaways and policy recommendations from my intervention: 🔍 The European Landscape: Geothermal energy already provides 2.8% of the EU’s DHC input, with the potential to cover 25% of the EU’s heating and cooling needs by 2030. 💪 Countries like Germany and France are leading the way: Munich aims for 70% geothermal DHC by 2040, and Paris has leveraged geothermal energy since 1969. 🌍 💡 Some Recommendations to Unlock Geothermal DHC Potential: - Strengthen Risk Mitigation and Financial Support: Expand financial instruments like France’s risk mitigation funds and Germany’s Munich Re insurance to cover exploration and drilling risks across the EU. Increase EU-level grants and blended finance schemes to lower upfront costs and attract private investment. 💶🛡️ - Streamline Permitting and Enhance Data Accessibility: Establish one-stop-shops for licensing and harmonize regulatory frameworks to accelerate project deployment. Develop EU-wide geoscience databases to support better decision-making and reduce exploration risk. 🚀🌐 - Foster Awareness and Build Workforce Capacity: Launch communication campaigns to highlight geothermal’s benefits and foster local community support. Invest in training programs to build a skilled workforce ready to drive the geothermal transition. 📢🎓 🌱 A Call for Action in Italy: Italy has vast untapped geothermal potential that could power district heating networks (my Country can be considered somewhat the Southern sister of Iceland on his matter), support national decarbonization goals, and enhance energy independence. By investing in this infrastructure and setting up an enabling policy and financial framework, Italy can become a leader in Europe’s clean thermal energy transition. 🌋 The Italian Geothermal Forum was an inspiring space for sharing ideas and solutions – and I’m hopeful that Italy can harness its geothermal strength to lead Europe’s energy transition. 💚⚡Thanks Associazione Italiana Riscaldamento Urbano - AIRU for the invitation. #GeothermalEnergy #DistrictHeating #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #Italy #EnergyTransition #Decarbonization #Innovation #DHC #ClimateAction Euroheat & Power DHC+ Platform EGEC Geothermal Alessandro Cecchi Flavio De Mestrangelo

  • We are thrilled to be part of the Coalition for Higher Ambition! 🚀 As we join this call to action, together with 21 other NGOs and associations, we urge EU leaders to support a net domestic emissions reduction target of at least 90% by 2040 and commit to an ambitious Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). We need strong support for post-2030 climate and energy policies that drive a just and competitive transition. Investing in clean and efficient heating and cooling solutions will be crucial to achieving these goals while strengthening energy security and affordability. 💪 Ambitious measures for the #heating and #cooling sector should be one of EU's key pillar. As our Policy Director, Pauline Lucas, puts it: “To achieve ambitious 2040 climate goals, we must urgently tackle our costly dependency on fossil fuels embedded in the heating and cooling infrastructure. The solution is already at hand: efficient district heating and cooling networks that tap into renewable and waste heat sources. All we need now is political determination to scale-up these networks, cut emissions, enhance energy security, and protect Europeans from rising energy costs.” More about the coalition: https://bit.ly/4bQzeU8 Read the full letter ⬇️ C40 Cities | Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe | Climate Group | Climate KIC | Climate Leadership Coalition | EKOenergy ecolabel | Eurocities | European Alliance to Save Energy (EU-ASE) | EAPN - European Anti Poverty Network | European Environmental Bureau | EiiF | European Heat Pump Association | Hagainitiativet | ICLEI Europe | Naturefriends International | RECS Energy Certificate Association | SOLIDAR & SOLIDAR Foundation | Solar Heat Europe (ESTIF) | Grupo Español para el Crecimiento Verde | T&E | We Mean Business Coalition
