Sometimes you need to jump in the deep end to learn swimming. If you have donors or potential donors who have high giving capacity but have not made big gifts to your nonprofit, don’t be shy! Since joining Prosperity 24/7, I've come to realise that there's not much that brings us together like a good Love to Ride challenge. We managed to top our respective leaderboards in the recent May challenge, although Greener Kirkcaldy gave us an excellent run for our money. We got new people involved in the challenge, we saved an estimated 546lb CO2 through cycling instead of driving and as well as cheering on our usual stalwarts, I also discovered which colleagues will come through last thing on a Friday and undertake a round-the-island-cycle for the extra miles... Sure, winning is fun but what's really nice is to see the behaviour changes starting to take root in the segment of our company that aren't die-hard cyclists (and I include myself in that). Last September I noted that I'm a reluctant cyclist but I'm becoming less reluctant and more willing to do that commute by bicycle. I've also noticed our bike store becoming busier and less frequent cyclists populating the Love to Ride feed more often. That's no mean feat. As someone who deals with change while delivering projects, change isn't always easy to embed but I've always been a fan of gamification as motivation in the right settings. And one of those right settings will be Prosperity Day in September, when our colleagues and clients will compete for bragging rights but also for the much better reason of raising money for charity - this year, we're supporting Healing Waves UK and Jersey Hospice Care - two very deserving charities. This imposing tower, is the famous Bishop Rock Lighthouse. 🗼 • The westernmost point of the Scilly isles, the light from this will potentially be the first sign of the UK that Tom sees as he makes his final approach. 🚨 • Known as the 'King of the lighthouses', this phenomenal structure is the equal tallest in England at 49 metres high. But it needs to be - the first iteration of the tower was washed away before it was complete, and in April 1874 this tower was hit by a succession of THIRTY SEVEN METRE WAVES!! The waves were so high that they reached the height of the lighthouse, shattering the reinforced glass of the lantern and flooding the living quarters inside!! It's since been extended 12 metres taller to help avoid that. It also holds the Guinness World Record for being the smallest island with a building on it. 😯 • The tower highlights yet another one of the hurdles that Tom has in this final shallow water phase of his journey; rocks. This light house warns him of the rocks surrounding the Scilly Isles, and he has all the required navigation charts to ensure he knows the locations of any further rocks on his approach. Aboard their rowing boat the team had millions of calories worth of specially formulated dehydrated meals that would give them maximum calories. But for Rod, it was a simple pack of Tesco noodles that did it for him. 🍜 • A meal he referred to as 'pure heaven'. 😇 • And whilst we now need to go and recalibrate what heaven looks like - it does highlight an important point; food aboard the boat is really important from an energy perspective - but it's also really important from a psychological perspective. 🧠 • Sure, Tesco noodles are not as calorie dense as the other meals aboard - but it was a little bowl of happiness for Rod, and as he sat there, with his heavenly meal, watching the sun go down, with this three friends...that boat was a very happy place to be in deed. ☺️ • One of the reasons for sharing some of these insights is to remind everyone that the team are still raising money for Get A-Head Charitable Trust and Meningitis Now - if you enjoyed following the team and didn't have a chance to donate - now is the time!
