When it comes to new NEPA compliance requirements in aviation, it’s clear skies ahead! 🛫 In line with broader updates to NEPA regulations, the FAA is now requiring a pre-planning phase for airport projects, which has been implemented to mitigate delays and facilitate efficient project progression. Airports/Aviation Market Leader Mike Arnold, LEED AP delves into this new comprehensive approach, detailing key considerations for clients like increased costs, extended timelines, and required assessments, and outlines best practices to ensure a smooth transition through the NEPA process. Read more about these updates and how we can help clients keep projects on track and in compliance: https://lnkd.in/eqbvBzit #NEPACompliance #FAARegulations #Aviation #AirportPlanning #SustainableAviation #EnvironmentalCompliance #FAA #NEPA

EASA publihed today its second Opinion of 2024. https://lnkd.in/djXtQ6Eg This Opinion proposes to update the applicable environmental protection requirements for the certification of products in Regulations (EU) 2018/1139 and (EU) No 748/2012. Article 9(2) of Regulation (EU) 2018/1139, as amended by Regulation (EU) 2021/1087, sets out the essential requirements for environmental protection that refer to the requirements contained in Volumes I, II and III of Annex 16 ‘Environmental Protection’ to the Convention on International Civil Aviation. On 20 March 2023, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council adopted new amendments to these volumes for the continuous improvement of the environmental protection standards and recommended practices (SARPs). The proposed regulatory material amends Article 9(2) of Regulation (EU) 2018/1139 to refer to these new amendments. The proposed updates to Annex I (Part 21) to Regulation (EU) No 748/2012 ensure the implementation of these amendments for the certification of products and clarify the applicable procedures for the environmental compatibility of the products. The proposed regulatory material will now be presented to the European Comission and Member States for its final adoption.

Aviation enthusiast majorly interested in safety, security, network planning, sustainability, airline and airport management
ICAO Annex 16 consists of standards and recommended practices (SARPs) related to environmental protection in aviation. Volume I focuses on mitigating aircraft noise impacts, emphasizing measures such as noise certification standards, operating restrictions, and land use planning to minimize noise exposure in communities near airports. On the other hand, Volume II concentrates on controlling and reducing emissions from aircraft engines, setting standards for pollutants like NOx and CO while promoting alternative fuels and technologies. Together, these volumes play a pivotal role in promoting sustainable aviation practices by addressing key environmental challenges and fostering collaboration among aviation stakeholders and affected communities. #ICAO #Annex16 #AviationEnvironment #EnvironmentalProtection #AircraftEmissions #AviationRegulations. https://lnkd.in/ey8FwPDp

As nations and regions introduce environmental reporting requirements, it can become complex and burdensome to monitor where new and existing reporting requirements exist, and whether any of your flights are subject to them. With 4AIR’s environmental regulatory monitoring and compliance program, we monitor your flying activity to alert you to potential compliance obligations and then provide a turnkey compliance package automatically.

#SAF #Book&Claim In order to decarbonize aviation it is important to upscale production and use of SAF and for that purpose a trusted and widely used book-and-claim system is needed. For further information on the subject , please read the article my colleague Sarah Haas and myself have written, which will be published in the first issue of the Journal of Air Law and Commerce in 2024 and has been pre-published on SSRN, available for download under https://lnkd.in/dv2W9tH7

Bombardier claims first for revealing environmental impacts BOMBARDIER is claiming to be the first business jet manufacturer to reveal the environmental impact of its portfolio, after providing public access to the footprint of all in-production aircraft. The manufacturer’s Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are a key part of its strategy to contribute to a more sustainable aerospace industry, delivered a year ahead of schedule, it said. “Challenger 650 aircraft joins Bombardier’s Challenger 3500, Global 5500, Global 6500 and Global 7500 aircraft as the only business jets in the world to carry an EPD,” according to Bombardier. The declarations enable the company and its partners to mitigate the environmental footprint of their products, it said. Used as a reference guide, the EPDs can help to target improvement areas over the short- or medium-terms. Environmental details on display include: aircraft CO2 emissions generated at each step of the value chain from raw material extraction until aircraft end-of-life. But the initiative is not designed to deliver direct commercial advantage. “The role of EPDs is not to stamp our aircraft as more sustainable than others, rather to take ownership of the environmental impact they generate,” said Jean-Christophe Gallagher, executive vice president, Aircraft Sales & Bombardier Defense, Bombardier. Environmental reports can be consulted like any other specification document, he added. “The same way we provide factual information about the unmatched width of the Challenger 650 aircraft’s cabin in its category or its leading dispatch reliability, Bombardier [now] publicly provides factual information on the environmental impact of its business jets.” Read more via the link. tinyurl.com/yznvrjs8 #sustainableaviation #aviation #businessjets #privatejets #aviationindustry

Sustainable aviation fuels (“SAF”) will be the most effective measure to achieve climate-neutrality in aviation but the ramp-up of production facilities is processing incredibly slow. How does the EU-wide legal framework look like? And which regulations do apply for air transportation? At our recent BARIG Full Board, Christine Kranich of ARNECKE SIBETH DABELSTEIN considered this subject from a legal point of view. #BARIG #sustainableaviation #SAF #arneckesibethdabelstein #asdlaw
