I'm in Madrid with the CU Denver Executive MBA Program. Here are 3 things I've learned in the last 24+ hours that have nothing to do with business: 𝟭. 𝗔𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗱. They're loud, aggressive, and build big nests (the size of cars) that can break trees. 𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘀. It's also the largest in Europe and has 3,418 rooms. 𝟯. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗘𝗹 𝗢𝘀𝗼 𝘆 𝗲𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗿𝗼ñ𝗼 (the bear and the strawberry tree), a plant whose leaves were once considered effective against the bubonic plague.

In celebrating Western Australia Day - WA Day - to commemorate the founding of the Swan River Colony in 1829, it can't go without acknowledgement of the passing of Dr John Gladstones AO and the impact he's made in establishig the Margaret River Wine Region. Dr Gladstones was a nationally and internationally recognised agronomist whose work has had a profound impact on Western Australian agriculture, our wine industry, in particular, and our community as a whole. As Vanya Cullen from Cullen Wines, Margaret River tributed: "Dr John Gladstones was a man of integrity and humility; a scientist and humanitarian to the core, curious about everything and always making enquiries about new ways. He gave so much to the Western Australian Wine Industry, never claiming anything other than to help and give and create the beginning of one of the world’s great wine growing regions…Margaret River.” Perhaps one the greatest tributes we might give Dr Gladstones as a region, is to model some of his leadership attributes: 🍇Have integrity - keep to your word and align in your thoughts, words and actions. 🍇Be a humanitarian - embrace human welfare and the welfare of your team and others, through kindness, support, understanding and empathy 🍇Be curious - seek to understand, before being understood. Relish the not-knowing and invite in learning and growth 🍇Be generous - give of your time, your attention, share your knowledge, teach, give value and uplift others. We gain more collectively from giving, than taking 🍇Create - be bold in your thinking, vision and imagination. Trust these yearnings and embrace the uncertainty and exhiliration that comes with taking the road not yet travelled. It can make all the difference. 🍇Collaborate - we may go faster alone, but we go further together. Share knowledge, encourage contribution, be open to learning from others and acknowledging their value. There's power in working together and leveraging and harnessing our invidivdual strengths, collectively Let's continue to live these attributes as leaders in our industry and continue the legacy of Dr John Gladstones. There’s been some fine tributes to Warren Parker on LinkedIn, which spoke of his wisdom and kindness. All true. I’ve been reflecting on another quality which impressed me, the way he was (how shall I put this?) quite demanding. I experienced this during my time on the Forestry Ministerial Advisory Group which he chaired, when I was on the sharp end of his inquiries a couple of times on issues of land use and climate change. It could be uncomfortable, but never unkind, nor unwelcome, because these are deeply serious issues. There is a lot at stake on issues of forestry and land use: people’s wellbeing, their livelihoods, the flourishing of communities and economies, our duties to the land, rivers and sea. These are fundamental questions for us as a country, not a place for frivolous thinking or poor decision making (even though that’s all too common). In that context, Warren was demanding because he gave these issues the gravity they deserved, and he made sure that others did too. If someone was evading an issue or being vague, he had this marvellous way of framing, then reframing, then re-reframing his point so that it couldn’t be avoided. In that way, he lifted everyone’s game. He encouraged critical thinking without being personalising or polarising - a skill we’re increasingly short of these days it seems. Warren was exceptionally knowledgeable and passionate about land use in Aotearoa NZ and its implications for the economy. He clearly saw the potential for our land-based sectors to be even better than they are, especially in a context of increased environmental strain and new innovations in environmental monitoring, data use, circular bioeconomy, etc. In my experience, he contributed to driving all these things forward. That’s why his loss is really all of our loss. Thanks Warren.
