For the past 2 years, the NSW government has failed to sign up to national mandatory design standards that require new developments to offer basic accessibility. These standards are not difficult or expensive: they simply require developers to build a step-free shower and level entry to houses. It will cost the government more to retro-fit houses to make them accessible after they are built. Windsor Castle Accessibility. Obviously a old AF Castle isn't particularly accessible. That said every effort had been made to plan and get around. 👏 Website included accessibility sections, including maps and specific disability sessions. This made planning much easier. 🫴 When I asked about disability lines I was also offered disability discounted ticket, without expectation of validation. 🙌 Ability to skip lines to get into main attractions, again without validation. Just trusting we knew what we needed. 🛗 Throughout the main buildings ushers would offer us accessible paths, and lifts where steps were coming up. They were polite and proactive. By the end I was exhausted, walking 2x my usual daily steps. It was a familiar, pre disability exhaustion of exploring not the exhaustion of repeating and defending basic asks. Wonderful to see improvements and human approaches to accessibly in tourism. People with #disability deserve to haver their right to adequate #housing protected. NSW is lagging behind the rest of Australia. Every state except NSW and WA has signed up to national mandatory accessible housing design standards. We think that people in NSW shouldn't be left behind. They deserve to have these protections too! People with disability in Vic, QLD & the ACT can also use their #HumanRightsAct to ensure that housing provided by public entities is accessible.
