“RFU has not sold out” shouts the headline. I can buy into that statement. Seems as though, and I’m not in the middle of the RFU obvs so looking at this as an outsider, this article actually highlights some scary things about the sport if it is to be believed. 1. Looks like it still has shaky economics underpinning it. It’s not going away soon. 2. Twickenham is a liability, and not an asset. Allianz appears to have done us a favour, kept English top level rugby afloat a bit longer. But the question is “how does the sport plug the holes in a sustainable fashion without flogging the family silver, because there’s only a finite amount of that?”. Substantial, radical rethink is required. Some of that rethinking is exposed in the article. I did a study of last year’s National 1 and 2 clubs accounts. Seems quite healthy, clear patterns in how they raise money, maintain membership, use their assets and pay their staff. Good business basically. They live within their means - albeit not universally, ‘cos that’s business, good and bad. The further you go up the tree, championship, premiership, and right to the top, the financial cloth is less likely to match the business pattern. Arguably it is the top that needs the rewiring as a business model. Maybe some of that is now happening.

SIGN OF THE TIMES I've created a snapshot of Premier League shirt sponsors for the 2023/24 season and how those same clubs compared to the first season of the Premier League (1992/93) Not all of this season's Premier League teams would have been in the top tier of the competition at its inception, but I thought it would make a good reference point for how sponsors and the industries have evolved in just over 30 years. If you take the clubs out of the equation, here are the main findings: ⚽ No Gambling Sponsors in 1992/93 - Now 40% of Premier League clubs ⚽ Alcohol Sponsorship at 20% in 1992/93 - Now 0% ⚽ A greater concentration of industry in current times ⚽ Financial Services are now a considerable factor when it comes to shirt sponsorships ⚽ Only 1 Airline sponsor (not the same airline) has carried through as a like-for-like in 30 years ⚽ Now a huge landscape change, but with Gambling soon to be outlawed on Premier League shirts. Which industry will fill the void?
