🌟🇹🇿 Exciting News from the Ministry of Minerals, Tanzania! 🌟 As we continue to forge ahead with our commitment to Tanzania’s economic development, Dr. Steven Kiruswa, The Deputy Minister of Minerals was thrilled to share some outstanding achievements from our mining sector during the inauguration of the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) towers in Loliondo, Ngorongoro District, Arusha. 🎯 2025 Target: The Ministry of Minerals has been tasked with the ambitious goal of contributing 10% to Tanzania’s GDP by 2025. We are proud to report that as of now, we have already surpassed a 9% contribution, leaving us just shy of our target by 0.9%. 📍 Regional Focus – Arusha: For the 2023/24 fiscal year, we set a target for the Arusha region to collect 5.5 billion shillings from mining activities. As of March this year, we have successfully collected 3.18 billion shillings. With continued effort, we are on track to meet our June 30, 2024 deadline. These milestones reflect the hard work and dedication of our teams across the country. Grain Malunga, the National Coordinator of the Malawi Chambers of Mines, has urged the government to utilize local experts in negotiating Mining Development Agreements (MDAs). Malunga made these remarks during a webinar on "Mining Development Agreements: Creating a Win-Win for the Investor and Government," organized by Perekezi ASM Consultants and sponsored by USAID. During the webinar, Malunga highlighted the critical role MDAs play in the mining sector. "A mining development agreement is a contract between the government and a mining company, governing the exploitation of mineral resources in accordance with existing laws," he explained. IRMA is a groundbreaking system designed to measure environmental and social responsibility in industrial mining, setting a global benchmark for best practices. As part of the team implementing this initiative at Unki Mine, I contributed significantly to our environmental management efforts. My role involved developing and overseeing strategies to meet IRMA’s stringent environmental criteria, ensuring our practices aligned with international best practices for sustainability. I am thrilled to announce that we successfully achieved the IRMA 75 certification! This certification reflects our dedication to transparency, accountability, and excellence in responsible mining. IRMA's standard, developed over a decade with input from over 100 stakeholders—including mining companies, NGOs, labor unions, and communities—provides a robust framework for ensuring environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Achieving the IRMA 75 rating means Unki met core critical requirements and at least 75% of the criteria in business integrity, planning for positive legacies, and social and environmental factors. Our commitment to IRMA aligns with Anglo American Platinum's sustainable mining plan, aiming to have all operations assessed against credible responsible mining standards by 2025. This accomplishment is a testament to our unwavering commitment to the highest standards of safety, environmental care, and community development.
