2024 Mining Indaba holds immense significance for Tanzania, as notable figures, including Hon. Dr. Steven L Kiruswa (MP), Deputy Honourable Minister of Minerals, Kheri Mahimbali, the Permanent Secretary of The Ministry of Minerals of Tanzania , and Tanzania Chamber of Mines (TCM), took stage with a theme “𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲.”Together, they demonstrated Tanzania's attractiveness for investment, exploration, and mining production. These priorities include improving power supply, upgrading transportation with projects like the standard gauge railway and ports expansion underway, and developing airports, all aimed at enhancing production and mineral trade. The Mining Indaba began on Monday with remarks from the South African and Zambian presidents, Prime Minister of the DRC and the South African Minister for Mineral Resources and Energy. Whilst they admitted a number of challenges facing the sector - including high commodity and energy prices and geopolitical challenges, it was great to hear success stories from leveraging on technology in defining the orebody and improving productivity. All the 3 Governments stressed on local beneficiation and social responsibility and reiterated their commitment to keep improving the mining investment climate. This investment aims to boost projects, particularly for small- and medium-scale miners, enhancing employment, government revenue, and national participation in mining. Australian companies such as Resolute Mining and Peak Resources have praised Tanzania's favorable investment climate. The pro-mining Liberian government collaborates closely with companies like Pasofino to ensure responsible mining practices and community development. Mining in Africa is a topic that can be discussed endlessly. It's a critical show of interest on how the giant Asian country, and the European have come to invest in the rich continent. The rich continent as described by some quarters as a continent with complex web of great power competition, security concerns, and conflicting interests, that has resulted into poverty, diseases and retrogressive economic growth. It has been further described as a place where the pursuit of economic growth and resource riches is intertwined with the struggle for responsible mining practices, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility. ASM can be referred to as Garimpo in Angola, Bamayi in Nigeria, Galamsey in Ghana, Zama Zama in South Africa, Chikorokoza in Zimbabwe, Digger or Creuseur in Democratic Republic of Congo, orpaillage in Francophone West Africa, and just plain Small- Scale Mining in most countries. It is often carried out by individuals, families, or small groups using low-tech methods, ASM plays a critical role in local economies. However, it also presents significant challenges, from environmental impacts to hazardous working conditions and limited access to resources. 💪 As we continue to engage with this sector, it’s crucial to recognize both the opportunities and the obstacles faced by these miners. Just returned from an exhilarating experience at Mining Indaba 2024 and I am excited to share insights and thoughts from the #MI24 where industry leaders convened to discuss the future of mining across Africa. The overarching theme of the conference revolved around the power of partnerships and collaboration in driving sustainable growth in the sector through positive technological disruptions. One key takeaway from the event was the emphasis on embracing technology, fostering meaningful partnerships between all relevant stakeholders, from government bodies to local communities and private enterprises operating across the very rich mining value chain. By working together, we can create a more conducive environment for responsible mining practices while ensuring mutual benefit for all involved. Tanzania's showcase proved to the world yet again, that it has so much potential to attract significant mining investments. With our rich mineral resources and a burgeoning market, Tanzania stands poised for increased investment and positive disruptions in the mining sector. The discussions were filled with hope and optimism for the future, highlighting the immense opportunities that lie ahead.
