The Arts and Humanities Research Council is interested to know if UK heritage organisations have applied or are planning to apply for Horizon Europe funding. They are interested to understand the UK's participation in such funding opportunities and any information from heritage organisations would be of great help. The Heritage Alliance is therefore asking organisations to fill in the poll (in the comments below) whether they have or have not considered this funding. If the answer is 'Yes' then Jasmine Alexander would be grateful to receive more details by email to office@theheritagealliance.org.uk. Poll: Do you know any UK organisations who have/are planning to apply for Horizon Europe Funding

📣 Important Update on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD) 🌍 Dear Community, I wanted to share some insights about the potential impacts of the recently adopted Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD) on producers of plastic films for food packaging (since Dec 19, 2023). ➡ Design Requirements: The PPWD addresses both packaging design and waste management. All packaging placed on the EU market must comply with essential requirements related to its manufacturing, composition, and reusable or recoverable nature. This could mean that producers may need to invest in research and development to ensure their packaging meets these requirements. ➡ Waste Management: The directive promotes the prevention of packaging waste, and the reuse and recycling of packaging waste. Producers may need to consider how their packaging can be more easily recycled or reused, which could involve changes to materials or designs. ➡ Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Schemes: By the end of 2024, EU countries should ensure that producer responsibility schemes are established for all packaging. These schemes could involve producers bearing the cost of managing the waste generated by their products, which could potentially increase their financial burdens. ➡ Recycling Targets: The directive sets specific targets for recycling, including 50% for plastic by 2025 and 55% by 2030. Producers may need to contribute to achieving these targets, possibly through participation in EPR schemes or investment in recycling technologies. ➡ Market Limitations: Specific waste reduction targets and mandatory design requirements could also have significant indirect and direct impacts on what packaging producers will be allowed to continue to place on the European market. This could potentially limit their customers’ choices and require adaptation to new market conditions. Let’s embrace these changes as opportunities to innovate and contribute to a more sustainable future! 🌱 While these changes may pose challenges, they also offer opportunities for innovation and development of more sustainable products. The exact impact on individual producers will depend on their current practices and their ability to adapt to these new requirements. For more specific information, producers should consult the full text of the directive or seek legal advice: Packaging and packaging waste: Council adopts its negotiating position on new rules for more sustainable packaging in the EU - Consilium (europa.eu) #sustainability #packaging #wastemanagement #recycling #innovation

The International Water Association conference in Toronto was undoubtedly a success. There were many exciting presentations of scientific and operational achievements (including mine;)). It is clear that the most critical threat to water resources is us - people. Hence, so many projects on micropollution or water scarcity. It was a very interesting conference, and I had the opportunity to present our wonderful, trendy ReNutriWater project. However, there is a but... A few issues that make me think. The conference entry fee was 920 pounds, which is the same as the salary of many Polish university employees. In addition, you had to pay for the hotel, transport, and food because you could not survive on what was served during the conference. So without additional funding (e.g., managed by the European Commission), we are nobody. The competition for the Project Innovation Awards was at a very high level. A significant prize pool was won by the Chinese because they had very interesting and ambitious projects. Why was Europe so poorly visible? We'll check in Glasgow.

This is important. The plan guides the funding calls for the remainder of the Horizon Europe programme. Our future projects need to deliver outputs and outcomes that contribute to these European ambitions.
