The upcoming 2024 European elections represent a great opportunity to allow companies to play a strategic role in overcoming these challenges and pave the way for an inclusive European Green Deal. ✋ Through extensive engagement with key stakeholders, CSR Europe has developed a comprehensive set of tools and recommendations tailored for businesses and policymakers. Pact for the Future Zero Draft in the Summit of the Future 2024 22 - 23 September 2024, UN HQs The Summit is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future. This once-in-a-generation opportunity serves as a moment to mend eroded trust and demonstrate that international cooperation can effectively tackle current challenges as well as those that have emerged in recent years or may yet be over the horizon. We already have the "what" in the form of many existing agreements and commitments, starting with the UN Charter and including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda and many others. The Summit of the Future will look at the "how" – how do we cooperate better to deliver on the above aspiration and goals? How do we better meet the needs of the present while also preparing for the challenges of the future? Germany and Namibia, co-facilitators of the Summit, announce the release of the zero draft of the Pact for the Future. The draft is intended to serve as a starting point for the intergovernmental deliberations this year, with the ultimate aim of adopting an ambitious, concise, action-oriented Pact for the Future, per resolution 76/307. https://lnkd.in/gMKFsKDV

On February 23, 2022, the European Commission adopted a proposal for a directive on corporate sustainability due diligence. On May 24, 2024, the Council of the European Union gave final approval to the political agreement and completed the adoption process. The aim of the Directive is "Fostering sustainable and responsible corporate behaviour for a just transition towards a sustainable economy." Those new rules will ensure that companies within the scope identify and address the adverse impact of their actions on human rights and the environment, both within and outside Europe. #Sustainability #EU #Environment #HumanRights

EMERGE systematically analysed the complex interactions between technological options, pollutant emissions and dispersion, and environment. It carred out measurements and modelling on actual vessels, along main shipping routes and in sensitive European marine regions. The Europe Sustainable Development Report 2023/24 (5th edition) 📊 provides an independent quantitative assessment of the progress by the European Union, its member states, and partner countries towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 🌍. Its recent edition is just out! 🚀 The SDGs, adopted by all UN Member States in 2015 and oriented towards 2030, call for integrated actions to promote social and economic prosperity, environmental sustainability, and global cooperation 🌱🌐. However, at midpoint, none of the 17 SDGs are on track to be achieved globally by 2030. 85% of the 140 SDG targets reviewed are declining or show very limited progress. 😔 Ten priority actions should be considered: 1. Respond to the grave danger of negative "Social Tipping Points" – significantly reduce the risk of poverty and social exclusion of European citizens. 💪 2. Double down efforts to achieve net-zero emissions in the EU by 2050, with major breakthroughs by 2030. 🌿♻️ 3. Strengthen regional and local authorities in achieving the SDGs – regularly monitor and report SDG progress at all levels. 📊 4. Curb negative international spillovers and support the transformation towards a sustainable trade system. 🌍🛑 5. Leverage team Europe for global SDG diplomacy – strengthen diverse and universal formats, especially the United Nations. 🤝🌐 6. Step up Europe's multilateral role – lead global efforts to reform the global financial architecture. 💼🌐 7. Re-focus the EU's International Partnerships on the SDGs – Move towards Mutually Transformative Cooperation. 🌱🤝 8. Mobilise the financial means for the transformations toward a sustainable future. 💰🔄 9. Institutionalise the integration of the SDGs into strategic planning, macroeconomic coordination, budget processes, research and innovation missions, and other policy instruments. 📈🔄 10. Set up new permanent mechanisms for structured and meaningful engagement with civil society, including youth, and within the European Parliament on SDG pathways and policies. 🗣️👥 Come on, we can do this better - we either win or lose. Together with other leading #business networks and companies we call on #EU policymakers for a 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗹 aimed at strengthening Europe’s economic competitiveness, social stability, and democracy.
