This event explored the vital need for these policies, navigated the diverse legal and cultural landscapes across the APAC region, and shared best practices and innovative approaches. -------------- We were honoured to have Hiromi Sproats, D&I Business Partner at Bloomberg, and Holly McGhee, Director of Asia-Pacific Diversity, Equity & Inclusiveness at EY, share how their organisations approach benefits and policies to create LGBT+ inclusive workplaces and, Sarah Chan, Programme Associate at Community Business, also provided insights from our LGBT+ Inclusion Index and Rainbow Families and How Organisations Can Better Support Them research, laying a robust foundation for our discussions. DAI is proud to co-found the newly established LGBTQI+ Inclusive Development Community of Practice (LGBTQI+ CoP) for international development practitioners to unite around a shared vision for advancing LGBTQ+ inclusion in program design, implementation, and operations. To date, a series of three LGBTQI+ Inclusive Development Solutions Summits hosted by DAI, Chemonics, and Deloitte have convened implementing partners, development practitioners, USAID, private sector, academia, industry coalitions, donors, and other stakeholders to explore the realities of implementing meaningful LGBTQI+ inclusive policies. The summits have also explored operationalizing USAID’s 2023 LGBTQI+ Inclusive Development Policy to preserve and advance the dignity, rights, and livelihoods of people of diverse sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC). The newly formed LGBTQI+ CoP is a direct product of these summits and a larger multi-year collaboration between leading international development organizations who intend to use the LGBTQI+ CoP platform to LGBTQI+ inclusion policy into specific, actionable interventions. The LGBTQI+ CoP has three primary objectives: 1. Convene Regularly: To discuss persisting trends, challenges, and opportunities related to LGBTQI+ inclusive development. 2. Establish Standards: To create a voluntary minimum set of standards for programmatic and organizational interventions. 3. Knowledge Sharing: To develop mechanisms for capturing, collaborating and disseminating knowledge products and best practices related to LGBTQI+ development outcomes. Together, members of the LGBTQI+ CoP will identify barriers and solutions to implement SOGIESC-focused interventions in complex and varied sociocultural and political systems, including centering and empowering local partners and queer organizations in development work to achieve sustainable, culturally relevant improvements to LGBTQI+ inclusion. We are thrilled to announce that another 4 organisations have successfully achieved Bronze Tier Status in their AWEI Foundation Submission. This is a remarkable accomplishment and a testament to their dedication to LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion throughout Australia. It represents a significant milestone in advancing the efforts of these organisations to make clear and tangible commitments to equity for their employees and customers. Congratulations to the following organisations who have most recently achieved Bronze Tier Status: · Bristol Myers Squibb · IKEA · Mirvac · Murdoch University These organisations who obtain Bronze Tier Status this year are in addition to 148 organisations who achieved this during the last Submission year, many of whom went on to reach a higher Tier recognition. The AWEI Submission has now entered its thirteenth year, and during this time, it has seen substantial changes in both its processes and structure. The latest changes have been implemented to accommodate the diverse range of submitters more effectively. To achieve Bronze Tier Status within the AWEI Foundation Submission, participating organisations must obtain 80% of allocated points. Once this is achieved, organisations are eligible to submit an AWEI Advanced Submission in effort to obtain Silver, Gold or Platinum Tier Status within this benchmark. Work done within this part of the AWEI is no small feat, as it means these achievers have established the baseline of LGBTQ+ inclusion efforts within their organisation, with the intent to continue and progress in this journey for employees and customers. All final winners, results and achievements of the current Submission year are announced at the annual Australian LGBTQ+ Inclusion Awards in May 2025. Honored to have had a small hand in supporting the development of this initiative which we hope will have a lasting impact within our unique industries of global development and humanitarian aid and assistance. Inclusive development is always good development. Together, and alongside our local partners, as global development professionals, we hope to raise the bar and elevate the conversation of how imperative issues of harmful social, cultural, and political norms around gender and sexuality hurt all of us and how tackling their root causes head on may amplify the possibilities of bettering our shared world- especially for those whom have been historically marginalized or underrepresented. Additionally, harnessed for good- leveraging the unique vantage points and experiences of those often cast to the dark edges of society due to their diverse genders or sexualities and a myriad of other characteristics- learning from our pain and sorrow, joy and light- we can also contribute to tackling some of the worlds most pressing problems- adding layers of nuance and understanding through the prism of life we uniquely have experienced- the good, the bad, and even the ugly. The art of the possible as they say. We are only limited by ourselves when it comes to making meaning of this shared space. Go team! Special shout out to the Society for International Development, United States (SID-US) for helping to somewhat incubate this group, and for major companies and organizations like DAI, Deloitte, Chemonics International, Abt Global, Tetra Tech, Save the Children US, EnCompass LLC, Outright International, and others who have gotten behind this initiative.
