WORLD BRAILLE DAY Celebrated since 2019, this event raises awareness of the importance of Braille as a means of communication in the full realisation of the human rights for blind and partially-sighted people. Braille is essential in the context of education, freedom of expression and opinion, as well as social inclusion, as reflected in article 2 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Braille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number, and even musical, mathematical and scientific symbols. Braille (named after its inventor in 19th century France, Louis Braille) is used by blind and partially-sighted people to read the same books and periodicals as those printed in a visual font. The World Health Organisation estimates that globally, at least 1 billion people have a near or distance vision impairment that could have been prevented or has yet to be addressed. Persons with vision impairment are more likely than those without to experience higher rates of poverty and disadvantage. Not meeting their needs, or fulfilling their rights, has wide-reaching consequences: vision loss often represents a lifetime of inequality, poorer health, and barriers to education and employment. The Boxser Diversity Initiative is concerned about the #Sarasota County Commission's recent funding decisions, particularly regarding the exclusion of important community programs like the Embracing Our Differences, Inc. exhibition, the Chalk Festival, and WSLR+Fogartyville. These programs play a vital role in cultural enrichment and community engagement in Sarasota County. While we appreciate the Commission's support for arts and cultural initiatives with $2.1 million in #tourist tax dollars, we believe excluding funding for these programs may overlook their significant impact. Embracing Our Differences, for instance, attracts hundreds of thousands of #visitors and promotes #humanrights and diversity through artistic expression. We urge the Commission to reconsider these decisions and ensure equitable support for all community programs that foster #dialogue and celebrate #diversity. Cultural diversity and artistic expression are essential to our community's fabric, and inclusive funding decisions will better reflect our shared values of tolerance and cultural vibrancy. Celebrating International Day of the Boy Child: Empowering Boys for a Brighter Future Today marks a special day that often gets overlooked in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives: International Day of the Boy Child. It's a day where we take a moment to reflect on the unique needs and challenges facing boys around the world, and to celebrate their potential, their dreams, and their right to be happy, healthy, and valued members of our communities. I've made it a personal tradition to commemorate this day because I believe deeply in the power and potential that resides within every boy. So, if no one else is going to do it, I'll be here to remind you all, always. Why do we need to celebrate? Well, because too often, boys are taught to suppress their emotions, to put others before themselves, and to tough it out even when they're struggling inside. We've burdened them with the expectation to always be strong, to never show vulnerability, and to never ask for help. But why should they have to carry that weight alone? We need to unlearn these harmful stereotypes and teach boys to embrace their full humanity. That means teaching them that it's okay to prioritize their own well-being, to share their emotions openly, and to seek support when they need it. It means encouraging them to celebrate their successes without fear of judgment, and to learn from their failures without feeling defeated. In short, it means creating a world where boys are allowed to be themselves – where they're not judged or vilified simply for being boys. A world where they're free to make mistakes, to learn and grow, and to pursue their passions with confidence and enthusiasm. So, here's to the future we hope for – a future where every boy is given the love, support, and encouragement he needs to thrive. Let's celebrate International Day of the Boy Child by committing ourselves to building that future together. A colleague of mine, an expert in the DEI space, posted this article, and I felt compelled to share. As those of us that operate as advocates and strategists in the diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging space, we understand that the fight for equity is just as important now as it was during the civil rights movement. As those who fight against diversity programs increasingly argue that a merit based system is the only fair system, I feel the need to remind them that meritocracy in the absence of equal opportunity is aristocracy. History has taught us that there is true value in the diversity of thoughts and ideas and even business strategies. The piece that many fail to understand is that many of those diverse thoughts, ideas, and business strategies often arise from including those who come from different cultures, experiences, and challenges in the decision-making processes. It’s not about blending in, it’s about embracing and celebrating our differences. Diversity and inclusion begins with intentionality, and as it continues to occur, it becomes muscle memory. #inclusionandbelonging #diversitymatters

💬 💫 Celebrating World Braille Day: Empowering Communication and Literacy for All This tactile system of six dots, has aided the lives of people with visual impairments and unlocked doors to communication, literacy, and independence. But the story of Braille extends beyond its remarkable creation... Did you know? ·       2.2 billion people globally have some form of vision impairment. ·       Only 1 in 10 blind individuals globally are proficient Braille readers/writers, which translates to educational and employment disparities. ·       In the UK, there are around 84,000 registered visually impaired people of working age, but only 1 in 4 of these is in employment. It is time that employers’ start doing more to encourage people with visual impairments to join and remain in the workforce, starting with existing recruitment and retention practices.
