Last week, I signed up for Dickie Bush & Nicolas Cole's writing program 🚢 Ship30for30 🚢. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆: 👉 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲: Over the last two years, I've been ghostwriting for Congressmen, political candidates, state political orgs, PACs, rural counties and more. I want to tell you about how I went from having little involvement in civic activities to making it a part of my daily life. 👉 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗜'𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲: I'll reflect on my acts of public humiliation. I'll try to make the laughter factor as great as the nuggets of wisdom I've taken away from the experience. 👉 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗜 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝗻𝗻'𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼: 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 = 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁. There are 3,142 counties in the U.S. Each county has communities with unique characteristics. At the county level, it's crucial for residents to understand how commissioners and officials serve their communities. Even more, residents need to understand how they can participate in decision-making. Without community engagement, our Constitutional Republic doesn't work. We're expected to play an active role in our own governance, one of the greatest blessings we have as Americans. There are many ways to get involved. And technology makes it easier than it was in the past. Over the next 30 days, I'll write about responsive local governance, civic engagement, and preserving rural communities. Spitfire and Kristen Grimm have launched a new project, Best-Case Scenario, to strengthen our social norm for safe and sound civic spaces that are free of violence and threats of violence for everyone, everywhere -- from libraries and school boards to city council and campuses to voting booths. Civic spaces are essential. Efforts to solve homelessness, address climate change and reform big systems like criminal justice and education require community engagement from hearings to public comment sessions. We want people to engage. But if these community engagement efforts trigger divisive and violent reactions (think of book banning and the politics over just using the bathroom), this will have a chilling effect on the very people we want to engage.    We can have violence-free, safe and sound civic spaces. In a time of increasing division, some are planning for the worst-case scenario. We must not forget the best-case scenario is still possible and plan to make that our reality. To strengthen the norm of nonviolence, we need leaders across academia, civil society, government and the private sector to see this as a core part of their leadership.    Using resources from experts who know how to de-escalate and cool temperatures, Spitfire and Kristen will share out lessons learned. Love this profile! And while I know so much about their work, it never fails to expand my grasp of the ways communities are, and should be more supported, to authorities of the conditions in which they live: “For University Park Slow Jams with USC, we made giant band-aids for community members to place on broken sidewalk “ouchies.”” Who gets to define when infrastructure is working or not working? How do formal, technical definitions fail in the face of lived experiences as they so often do? This example makes me wonder why communities don’t get to issue “traffic tickets” to public agencies who fail to maintain equitable access to services and safe outcomes. There’s actually a legal pathway for this. Getting hip to Public Matters approach to #conspiratorialjoy should be pre-work for anyone involved in U.S. Department of Transportation #reconnectingcommunities program!
