"You can't squeeze blood from a turnip" My dad's legacy lives within the remnants of life lessons taught through phrases like this. When I did a google search on what this phrase really means - it means that you cannot get money from someone who doesn't have it. I always thought it was more than this... I would argue that you can't get quality work from someone who is burnt out. You can't ask someone to do a job without support that they don't have the skill for yet. You can't expect perfection with sub-quality materials. Can you come up with others? Students in transition to higher education spaces may be trying to "squeeze blood from a turnip" if... -they don't have college educated parents to guide them through the hidden curriculum - they have a disability that makes different learning tasks difficult -they didn't learn good study skills in high school Getting supports to equal the playing field is something that we, as educators, can advocate for - summer bridge programs, specialized supports for students with different needs, destigmatizing supports and request for accommodations, and making sure that these offices are fully staffed and appropriately trained so that when I student has a need they can get that need met. #OccupationalTherapy #StudentSuccess #TheCollegeOT

Speaker I Author of Seven Steps to College Success: A Pathway for Students with Disabilities | College Learning Disabilities Specialist | Demystifying College Transition for Students with Disabilities
Whether you're parent of a student with a disability or work with them, you must know the facts about the college environment so that you can prepare your student(s) for it. Too many people get bad information or make assumptions, leaving students without the skills they need to make a smooth college transition. I offer two opportunities to learn from me at your own pace on your own time: In "Preparing Students with Disabilities for Successful College Transition," I discuss • the shifts in prevailing laws • how students access accommodations • a few accommodations that are commonly approved and one that isn't • what the law says about disability disclosure in the admissions process • the varying levels of support available In “College Accommodations: What They Are and Why They Change,” I take a deep dive on: • academic accommodations colleges commonly approve or don’t – and why (you might be surprised by what you learn) • what a typical process for registering with disability services involves – the steps involved and the self-knowledge students will need to complete it • the documentation colleges may require (this may also offer some surprises” Now is a great time to watch, when there's plenty of time left in the school year to get students on the right path: https://bit.ly/ECHNZ1 Contact me for information on how to get a discount: https://lnkd.in/eRtrUNUD #SpecialEducation #IEP #CollegeAccommodations #LearningDisabilities #ADHD #Dyslexia
