It was a pleasure to have spoken on the panel discussing "What is the impact investing journey for family offices?" at the Impact Seminar Series hosted by Phenix Capital Group last week.   We explored the evolving role of family offices in driving positive change, focusing on how they can transition from philanthropy to impact investing, the importance of ethical governance, and the ways next generation of investors are shaping the future.   The conversation touched on how impact can serve as both a value-creation tool and a risk mitigator, while still delivering strong financial returns. We also discussed various measurements and frameworks, including our External Rate of Return that we developed with the The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) to measure the impact an investment has on the society, economy, and environment around it. Foundation and University Endowments are social trusts for social purposes. So are their much larger cousins, Workforce Pensions. Collectively, they share the characteristics of vast size, programmatic purpose (different in the details, but all pegged to a dignified future) and forever time. This gives them all the power to use the technologies of spreadsheet math, desktop publishing and digital communication to negotiate with enterprise of any size, in any business, anywhere on the planet. They can use that power to negotiate ownership for extracting maximum possible returns by timing and riding the booms and busts in the capital markets. They can also use that power to negotiate for prudent stewardship of interactions in a dignified economy through equity payback to an actuarial/fiduciary cost of money, plus opportunistic upside, from enterprise cash flows prioritized by contract for suitability, longevity and fairness. Just wrapped up an incredible day at the PE Insight event, and I'm buzzing with excitement and new insights! 🚀 As an emerging fund manager, I can't overstate how valuable this experience has been. The depth of discussions across all sessions was truly remarkable. From future opportunities and challenges to fundraising strategies, every topic was explored with a level of detail I've rarely encountered elsewhere. 📊💡 What struck me most was the inclusivity of the panels. The questions posed to speakers like Imogen Richards, Ana Maria Harrison, Paul Lamacraft, and Petros Krappas, CFA (among many others) delved into areas often overlooked in typical industry conversations. It was refreshing to hear perspectives that resonated with the challenges and aspirations of emerging managers like myself. 🌟 The session on "Democratisation of Private Equity" particularly hit home. As someone navigating this complex landscape, hearing industry leaders discuss ways to make PE more accessible was both inspiring and reassuring. 🚪✨ I left each talk feeling not just informed, but truly understood and supported. The speakers' willingness to share their experiences – both successes and challenges – created an atmosphere of genuine camaraderie. It's empowering to realise that even the most accomplished professionals were aware of, or have walked in our shoes. 👣💪 To my fellow emerging fund managers: events like these are goldmines of knowledge and networking opportunities. The insights gained here will undoubtedly shape my approach in the coming year. A massive thank you to PE Insight for organising such a comprehensive and inclusive event.
