Fanning Howey was proud to attend the wall signing for the new Van Wert Campus of Northwest State Community College. Dr. Todd Hernandez, president of Northwest State, and Dr. Jon Tomlinson, dean of the Van Wert campus, did a fantastic job hosting the event. The wall signing celebrated the end of design for the $4.8M project, which is transforming a former manufacturing building headquarters into an academic building with classrooms, offices and social space. Fanning Howey is serving as the Architect and Engineer of Record for the project. We're thrilled to partner with Northwest State, contractor Alexander & Bebout, Inc. and the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission on this amazing project. #highereducation #adaptivereuse #smarterplaces

In urban design and planning "Density" is not a bad word despite what many would have you believe. I'm looking forward to speaking as part of a panel at an event called "Deliberating the 'D' Word" next week. The event is a follow up to a great article published by Soapbox, authored by AIA Cincinnati, that you can read here: https://lnkd.in/gPCnMA9g For those of us in Cincinnati (or just about every other forward-thinking community) who have been considering zoning changes which would allow incremental increases in residential density, the public discourse has become alarmingly misguided. Claims that increased density automatically brings low-income residents, crime, decay, and a level of deterioration just short of famine and pestilence, are wrong-headed and fear-based. Reasonable density developed in walkable neighborhoods is a fiscally responsible return to traditional living which strengthens communities. If this debate sounds interesting to you, join us for the discussion on June 6th (5:30-7:00pm) at Turner Construction Company, 510 Race Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202.

With one of the largest K-12 practices in the country, PBK Architects is a great source for checking in on the latest trends. Building Design+Construction Media recently chatted with Dan Boggio, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB, Founder & Executive Chair, and Melissa Turnbaugh, AIA, NCARB, Partner & National Education & Innovation Leader, who reported that K-12 construction is alive and well, particularly in Texas, Calif. and Fla. where there’s been an unprecedented number of school referendums. Another major trend is school boards showing much interest in evidence-based research supporting learning. Consequently, more schools are requesting outdoor learning spaces, experiential learning environments and extra-curricular arts and sports programs and facilities—all of which have been shown to enhance learning for students. “In this environment we’re in where school boards are ready to adopt research-based design,… it’s the design community’s responsibility to harvest this research and then design accordingly. We can change the lives of students,” states Boggio. #architecture #k12design #schooldesign #engineering #outdoorlearning

wək̓ʷan̓əs tə syaqʷəm Elementary showcases what's possible for mass timber in learning environments. From cost-effectiveness and accelerated construction schedules, to biophilic design and lower embodied carbon—the future of mass timber in schools is a bright one. Learn more about wək̓ʷan̓əs tə syaqʷəm and its exemplary use of mass timber in this video from long-time collaborator and champion of structural innovation, Fast + Epp.
wək̓ʷan̓əs tə syaqʷəm Elementary and Bayview Elementary schools in Vancouver, BC, stand as proud exemplars of #masstimber construction's potential to transform educational spaces while championing environmental sustainability. As the first schools in BC to use entirely mass timber construction, they embody the principles of responsible building practices, meticulously crafted to surpass the BC Province's Wood First guidelines—an essential stride in aligning with the City of Vancouver's ambitious carbon emission reduction objectives. The two buildings represent the vision of the Vancouver School Board Project office, the creativity of the design consultants, the expertise of the installers, fabricators and contractors and the commitment of the entire project team. It is good to see this nationwide programme of school rebuilds following the RAAC crisis is underway with this contract win for BAM Construction and Ryder Architecture. Last September, Emma Greenland, our Education Sector lead, wrote a short piece highlighting the key acoustic considerations that should be given to projects requiring improvement works including:- >When replacing RAAC roofing slabs, a replacement lightweight roof needs to be checked to ensure environmental noise ingress (for schools near to airports for example), rain noise and fixed plant noise ingress is not going to be an issue, and sound insulation of walls is not compromised by transmission via the partition head. >Replacement ceilings need to include fixed or suspended sound absorption and/or acoustic wall panels in order to achieve good control of reverberation time and hence suitable listening conditions for all students, but particularly those with: - Special Hearing and Communication Needs - English as an additional Language, - younger children, - Social Emotional and Mental Health Needs (SEMH) and AD/HD - SLCN, Language Impairment and even Dyslexia If your school is affected by the RAAC crisis, or you happen to be involved with the refurbishment of one, we can offer advice to check the potential impact of alternative facilities and upgrade schemes on acoustics and listening in schools. Bright Spaces, for Bright minds and Bright Futures I supported East Coast Architects in the design of two exemplary schools—7 Fountains Primary School and Vele Secondary School—where innovative daylighting strategies and smart lighting controls have transformed energy use in classrooms. Both schools feature simple, well-placed light switches that encourage the use of natural daylight and drastically reduce the need for artificial lighting. The experience at 7 Fountains helped refine the approach at Vele, where energy bills were compared with those of a neighboring school, showing remarkable savings. Read the attached where I explain how these strategies have created brighter, more energy-efficient spaces for learning—without relying on costly technology. #DaylightDesign, #EnergyEfficiency #PassiveDesign #SustainableArchitecture #SchoolDesign Mary Haw PJC+Partners Steve Kinsler Angela Buckland Unfortunately, East Coast Architects closed their doors after 25 years of some amazing and award winning work as Social Architecture. Their projects are archived here (https://lnkd.in/dTBs8y7D). I will include this link in future posts related to their projects. Summer Sprint for School Construction is On for Erickson-Hall CONSTRUCTION: Escondido Co. Thrives in Niche Industry BY RAY HUARD ESCONDIDO – Erickson-Hall Construction Company is in the midst of what company President Mat Gates calls a summer sprint of school construction projects in Southern California, including two in San Diego County. “We’re pushing upwards of about $100 million of work,” Gates said. Since its founding in 1998 with a staff of four, the employee-owned company has grown to have 212 employees and has become a powerhouse in school construction from new buildings to renovations. “Doing schools is a niche industry. The requirements in California are extensive, and we’ve been a school builder since the very beginning and we were building schools with other companies as we were coming up through the trades,” Gates said. Of the $3.5 billion in construction projects that Erickson-Hall has completed, $3 billion has been for K-12 and higher education projects. Gates said that 30% to 35% of the company’s annual revenue comes from school projects that it does during the summer. This summer, the company has seven school projects under way, including nearly $30 million of work at Albert Einstein Academy Charter School for San Diego Unified School District and a $9 million library modernization project at Eastlake High School for the Sweetwater Union High School District. The Eastlake work is particularly challenging because it has to be done quickly, Gates said. “We’ve got about six, seven weeks to get it done,” Gates said. “We’re basically stripping the library and rebuilding it, leaving the frame intact, (adding) new technology, new infrastructure, and redoing the shelving and putting it back together.” At Albert Einstein Academy, Erickson-Hall plans to complete about $8 million to $9 million of work on the overall $30 million project that Gates said would take a year to complete. “Basically, we’re prepping for a new building,” Gates said, “putting in the site work while the kids are gone.” https://lnkd.in/eyn9EjPU #construction #commercialrealestate #development #schools #building
