🎈 Happy Birthday Youth Employment Group 🎈 This day four years ago the YEG was formed to bring together the youth employment sector to help drive the UK’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on young people. Now with over 300 member organisations, our coalition advocates for full and inclusive employment for young people. We exist to ensure that there is a quality employment, education or training pathway for all young people, in particular the most marginalised. Together we: 🔸 Understand the youth employment landscape with an eye on future economic shocks and persistent challenges. 🔸 Raise the profile of labour market issues facing young people. 🔸 Provide tools with practical guidance on issues and how to tackle them. 🔸 Drive change in policy and activity by working with employers, local and national governments, civic society and young people. The new Government plans to introduce its new Employment Rights Bill, in an effort to improve career prospects for young people. Our Youth Employment Index found that although the UK excels in terms of overall employment, it's actually driven by above-average rates of part-time working - which tends to be within a pathway to a meaningful career. Why does this matter? As our economist Barret Kupelian explains below - improving the opportunities for our future generations will bring large potential wealth to our overall economy. The data in our 2024 Youth Employment Index, co-produced with Connectr, shows: - A person aged under 25 is four times more likely to be unemployed than one aged over 25. - Regional disparity is evident - with more young people not in education, employment or training in the North East and Scotland, for example, compared to the South West. Our Chief Economist, Barret Kupelian, said: “Improving the opportunities for the UK’s youth will bring large potential wealth to the overall economy. While the UK is performing close to the OECD average, there are clear economic and social benefits that could be achieved through providing an integrated approach to youth employment, and avoiding the long-term impacts we saw for young workers following the 2008 global financial crisis. “The high level of part time and non-secure employment among the young should provide concern for UK policymakers as it indicates many are finding jobs but are struggling to find pathways to careers. The blueprint for improvement for the UK can be seen in the top performing countries in the OECD. They consistently show results have been achieved through robust vocational training and apprenticeship systems, alongside initiatives to set young people up for a smooth transition from education to work through regimes that connect students with industry.” How has your experience been? At Youth Employment UK, we have been delivering youth voice sessions with young people in schools to hear their thoughts on careers experiences. One thing is clear - young people value exposure to employers and workplaces. "It's better to hear straight from the person doing the job" "You can ask them more about what they do" "They're the expert" It's crucial for employers to engage with young people and help them gain insight into their industry. Building relationships with local schools and colleges is a great way for organisations to share their expertise and knowledge. As an organisation, are you supporting young people local to you? Offering early careers activities for young people is the perfect way to do this, and we recognise this as part of our Good Youth Employment Standards. This week I had the pleasure in hosting a Q&A with Youth Employment UK Members - Victoria Cole, Hayley White CMgr MCMI and Daksha Stancilas at a Youth Employment Group Meeting. It was important to hear from employers about the workforce challenges they are struggling with, why employing young people is important and what their policy asks of the next government would be. Working with employers from all sectors we know that there are a number of issues presenting HR & Leadership teams across the UK; skills gaps, ageing workforce, attraction, sector perceptions, recruiting in certain geographies, fulfilling EDI aspirations, internal resources and budget constraints, making best use or just sense of, government initiatives and so much more. Consistently these Members shared their concerns around how the system does or does not prepare young people for work, recognising that work experience is often key to unlocking aspirations and work skills, but that it is not always easy to deliver. Red tape, H&S, Safeguarding, Hybrid environments, limited resources making it tough for employers. We also heard that the rigidness of the Apprenticeship Levy is a challenge along with the expectations of English & Maths or functional skills for some young people even into entry roles. These were not revelations from our employer Members this week, we have been hearing many of the same things for years. It is why we focus our Membership on providing advice, support, insight, best practice and case studies to help our employer network get to where they want to be as quality employers for young people. Our new Good Youth Employment Benchmark allows our Members to measure, review and get the support they need to tweak or adapt current practice based on what we know works. Our Members Dashboard is packed with the resources HR colleagues and line managers need to support young people at every stage from education into employment and through their early career development. Whilst our policy and research work ensures that we are able to provide Members with the latest updates and insight from across government (national and local), think tanks, partner and other specialist organisations and most importantly and unique to us young people themselves #YouthVoiceCensus. We will be showcasing best practice of our Employer Members in the coming months, and highlighting the innovation of Pret A Manger, Care UK and Greencore and our other Members and what it is that makes them truly youth friendly.
