🔈 To mark #NationalMentoringDay, Football Beyond Borders practitioner Khai tells us why the support he provides as a trusted adult is important for young people. Our Building Futures programme in partnership with Football Beyond Borders will test the power of mentoring and wellbeing support for secondary school students at risk of missing out on further learning or employment. The design of the programme will have the strongest international evidence for mentoring at its heart. ➡️https://lnkd.in/ekxZjrjC

As we reach the end of Black History Month, we’re reflecting on what young people from an ethnic minority background have told us about their experiences and worries in and out of work. Our Discrimination and Work report found that half of ethnically minoritised young people face prejudice and discrimination as they enter the world of work. Seven in ten of those young people who had faced discrimination planned to switch industries. In Youth Employment UK’s 2024 Youth Voice Census report, discrimination was identified as the biggest worry that young people have for the country. 17% of respondents in work stated they had personally experienced bullying or harassment at least once, and 24% of respondents said they had seen it happen. In this blog we explore the issues and solutions that young people want to see, and share how employers can listen, act and ensure that workplaces work for all ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eQe3EJNv

Yesterday, we were delighted to host an event for colleagues at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to showcase the fantastic work of our grantees. 💡 It was great to hear about the impact their work is having on young people’s lives, and highlight how we have been working in partnership to generate evidence to drive systemic change. Thanks to Cumbria Youth Alliance, Football Beyond Borders, Right To Succeed, Dartington Service Design Lab, and Employment Related Services Association (ERSA) for joining us!

Fantastic event this week with Workwhile, launching a new definition of Good Work, uniquely shaped by young people. A huge thank you to the brilliant youth panelists who shared such powerful perspectives. Some profound insights on the value that young people are eager to bring to the workplace, and the support employers can offer to empower young people to thrive. Read the definition, hear from the young people who created it, and find out about our ongoing work in this area: https://lnkd.in/eYn6gBer Thank you to everyone who joined us. Special thanks to Anna Ambrose for such fantastic work leading this project; to Howard Dawber, Christopher Thomas, Joseph Evans, Nishi Mayor and Barry Fletcher for sharing their perspectives at the launch event; to our brilliant Employer Engagement Team Annum M., Jayde Edwards, Eleanor Marsea and Katy Neep for all their work; and to Dr Hannah King, who is working with us to delve even deeper into understanding what constitutes Good Work for young people, for leading a fruitful roundtable discussion. #youthvoice #goodwork

There's still time to submit your evidence to help us understand what works to promote EDI in the workplace! Find out what we're looking for and submit your evidence by the end of October. https://lnkd.in/ehizRqnA #EDI #DEI
Do you have evidence on what works to promote EDI in the workplace? The Institute for Employment Studies (IES) are working with us to collate evidence on what works to promote employer action and behaviour change in relation to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), with a particular focus on young people from Black, Pakistani and Bangladeshi backgrounds. To capture the existing evidence, IES will systematically interrogate relevant materials in the public domain. But, we know there will be good quality evidence that may not be publicly available. If you have evidence that you’d like to recommend, we’d love to know about it. Find out more about what we’re looking for and how to submit evidence, before Thursday 31 October: https://lnkd.in/ehizRqnA

We recently released our Mentoring Toolkit Unwrapped, a practical resource to help employers offer meaningful mentoring programmes for young people. Today, Fergus Hynd from National Grid tells us about the Grid for Good Programme, designed to help socioeconomically disadvantaged young people into employment. “The young people we work with may have complex challenges such as mental health conditions or special educational needs…Being able to help a young person from one of these cohorts into the workplace, creates a relatable role model for others who follow in their footsteps. That can spark real change in a community.” If you’re thinking about setting up a mentoring programme to help underrepresented talent to thrive in your organisation, hear more from Fergus about the successes at National Grid. https://lnkd.in/eB6eGdxr And find more practical tips in our Mentoring Toolkit Unwrapped https://lnkd.in/e-AbaM8H
