CLIMATE ACTION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: STRATEGIES AND INITIATIVES TO REDUCE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS AND PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.. The urgent need to address climate change and promote sustainable development has led to a surge in strategies and initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and safeguarding the planet's future. ■At the forefront of this effort is the United Nations #SustainableDevelopmentGoals (#SDGs), which provide a comprehensive framework for tackling #climatechange, #poverty, #inequality, and #environmental degradation. ■■One key strategy is transitioning to renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, to decrease dependence on fossil fuels and lower emissions. Energy efficiency measures, like retrofitting buildings and promoting sustainable transportation, are crucial. Electrifying industries and implementing carbon capture and storage technologies are also vital steps. ■Sustainable land use practices, including reforestation and agroforestry, are essential for sequestering carbon dioxide and preserving biodiversity. ■Climate-resilient agriculture and water management systems ensure food security and protect vulnerable communities. Reducing waste and promoting circular economies help minimize emissions and conserve resources. Initiatives like carbon pricing, green bonds, and impact investing mobilize financial resources for climate action. ■Climate-resilient infrastructure, early warning systems, and climate-smart agriculture enhance adaptive capacities. International cooperation, capacity building, and climate education empower countries to address climate change and achieve sustainable development. ■By implementing these strategies and initiatives, we can mitigate climate change, promote sustainable development, and create a more equitable and prosperous future for all. ■Continuous innovation, collaboration, and commitment are essential for achieving this vision and ensuring a livable planet for generations to come. #COP29Baku 🌍🌍🌍 AAI held another very insightful event on technological innovations as a catalyst for #Climate #Adaptation in Africa, in exploring ways in which technological innovations can impact and enhance adaptation efforts. It starts by understanding the key components that would create a fertile environment for technological innovations to be effective. 🌍🌍🌍 🚩The research capacity that would explore the local context and provide adequate solutions, the expert innovators that would develop innovations based on the afore mentioned research, the process of co creation with the beneficiaries is crucial for a successful implementation of the innovations and finally the policy makers that would enable the innovations to scale up. 🚩Dr Portia Adade Williams Portia Adade Williams insisted on the importance of embedding indigenous knowledge into the process especially when exploring nature based innovations. Nature based innovation that would be integral part of a wholistic approach to development and implementation of the innovations, when partnered with the right institutional and technological innovations. 🚩The right conditions for a successful development and implantation would need the governments to create enabling environment, the NAP’s need to be aligned with the priorities of the major funds (such as GCF, AF), mixed source of funding are essential to explore, put a great accent on capacity building and development, initiate and maintain a constructive dialogue with policy makers in regards to funding opportunities, the co-creation aspect of innovation is a must in regards to local context application and communicate on successes and challenges via feedback. 🎙️Dr Adade, went further in the interview attached on what would help #Africa to improve financial support for technological innovation and expanded the energy access component of technological innovations in the African context. Despite meeting its numerical target, the $100 billion annual commitment established at the 2009 Copenhagen Summit often did not adequately fulfill the dynamic needs of developing nations. Now, all attention is directed towards #Baku, Azerbaijan, where nations aim to finalize the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG). The #NCQG is a critical aspect of the #ParisAgreement, designed to address the shortcomings of the previous financial commitment. At #COP29, developing economies hope for a comprehensive #financialframework aligning with their #climateobjectives. They seek a target that addresses immediate requirements and fosters long-term resilience against #climatechange impacts. This funding urgency is heightened by increasing #climaterelateddisasters and the estimated need for investments ranging from $1.1 trillion annually by 2025 to $1.8 trillion by 2030 for effective #mitigation and #adaptation. Previous #funding frameworks have encountered obstacles, including limited access to funds, misalignment with local priorities, and concerns regarding #debtsustainability. Many developing countries have also faced challenges in utilizing the funds received effectively, resulting in projects that fail to deliver expected #climatebenefits. The NCQG's success will depend on its capacity to mobilize significant #resources while ensuring #equitableaccess and prioritizing #adaptationfinance. If implemented effectively, it could stimulate private-sector investment and strengthen international trust. The goal represents a promising shift towards more effective #climatefinance, empowering developing nations to pursue #sustainabledevelopment while addressing their unique #climaterisks. The #NewCollectiveQuantifiedGoal's main objectives include: ✅ Addressing climate finance gaps through a more realistic and ambitious #financialtarget that reflects the evolving needs of developing nations. ✅ Supporting sustainable development to align financial flows with #sustainabledevelopment pathways, ensuring that investments contribute to low #ghg emissions and #climateresilient development. ✅ Enhancing global cooperation by strengthening trust and #collaboration among nations and promoting a collective commitment to #climateaction. ✅ Fostering adaptation and #resilience to increase the ability of developing countries to adapt to adverse climate change impacts and promote resilience within #vulnerablecommunities. ✅ Mobilizing financial resources by redefining the scale of financial muscle that developed countries need to mobilize to implement their Nationally Determined Contributions (#NDCs) effectively. Sustainability and decarbonization in Africa 🌍 A closer look at Africa’s decarbonization journey During the "Geopolitics and Sustainability" session, keynote speaker Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke highlighted the challenges and opportunities African nations face in the global push for decarbonization: Challenge: While African nations are under pressure to decarbonize, they often lack the resources and technical support to do so. Opportunity: Leaders like Kenyan President William Ruto see green development as a chance to position Africa as a hub for sustainable progress. Frustration: Global funding disproportionately favors mitigation over adaptation, neglecting Africa’s urgent need for climate resilience. 💡 Key takeaway: Sustainability strategies must align with local priorities, balancing global goals with pressing regional needs like food security and economic resilience. What lessons can global businesses learn from Africa’s innovative approach to sustainability? Let’s discuss! 🌱 Picture: Clélia Rochat

Growing is a process (I should know, I used to be way smaller than I am now). It happens incrementally, not suddenly. Chances are, at some point, you look back wondering how it all happened so fast. Interest in green enterprises in the MENA-region is growing, too. The Green Growth Summit, organized by Hivos in partnership with Impact Europe, could be one of those notches on the wall that makes the whole ecosystem stand a little bit more tall. Looking forward to joining in Cairo, to witness it with my own eyes. Before leaving, I wrote down a few thoughts on how this event matters, and why it matters:
The dangers posed by climate change, unemployment rates and transition risk loom large over the MENA-region. However, those negatives may actually be motivating tremendous positive change. The Green Growth Summit, organized by Hivos in partnership with Impact Europe, aims to help turn the tide for green enterprises in the region: https://lnkd.in/efNUaBfY #ImpactTogether European Commission #EU #MarketBuilding Virginie Cossoul 🕊️✌️Ewa Konczal Entissar El Mokhtar Tom Dinneweth Martijn Blom
