🛬 Last week I returned from The SmarterE in Munich, where I have seen quite a few things in the energy innovation space, which I would like to share. First of all, out of my two experiences at the SmarterE (more familiar as InterSolar Europe until recently), this one was truly outstanding - the largest exhibition I've ever been to and the one which also coincided with the 2024 Euro Cup games in Germany (including one game in Munich during the conference hours). In addition, this time I wore an exhibitor hat - presenting Soltell Systems at the EMPower @SmarterE pavillion C5.650F. 🌞Now let me share an interesting development from GCL Technology Holdings Limited: GCL presented their latest perovskite solar module technology at the Intersolar Europe Exhibition @SmarterE in Munich. They showcased two modules: a pure perovskite module with over 19% efficiency and a perovskite-silicon tandem module exceeding 26% efficiency. These modules have passed IEC certification, suggesting promising durability. With plans for mass production by late 2025 and potential cost savings of up to 50% per watt and reaching an energy threshold of 30% conversion efficiency, GCL is set to bring significant advancements to solar generation technology. 🌞💡As someone who began his energytech career in PV device engineering, I find this to be a truly remarkable milestone! 🌟 We are approaching the notorious Shockley–Queisser limit in solar energy conversion, and the solar industry is on the verge of surpassing it! 🚀 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆📈 Last week at Intersolar in Munich we showcased one of our latest R&D solar achievements: our new Tandem/Silicon Stacked Solar Cell Module sets a world record with a module conversion efficiency of 33.66%. 🌟 📊 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: - World Record Efficiency: Achieved 33.66% conversion efficiency, breaking our previous record of 32.65%. - Advanced Technology: Combines a tandem double-junction solar cell module with a silicon solar cell module, efficiently converting light of various wavelengths into energy. - Material Savings: The new structure reduces the thickness of the tandem cells to less than one-third of conventional triple-junction cells. 🔬 Developed under the Research and Development Project for Mobile Solar Cells, sponsored by NEDO, this breakthrough is a significant step towards enhancing solar energy use in electric vehicles, mobile equipment, aerospace, and aviation. #TOPCon 4.0 Era is Here 📈 TOPCon, already a well-established PV cell technology, has grown in popularity because of its remarkable performance-to-price ratio. But don't be misled into thinking it has no future. The innovation hasn't stopped, and this cell technology has recently been upgraded to version 4.0. 🔧 TOPCon 4.0 boasts an upgrade with low-corrosion slurry + LIF technology and multi-layer Poly-Si/POML technology, improving efficiency by 0.3%-0.5%. These advancements are already available and successfully offered by Astronergy Solar. Intersolar North America 🇺🇸 vs Intersolar Europe 🇪🇺 I attended Intersolar North America and Energy Storage North America last week, a name well-known in Europe as Intersolar is THE event to attend if you are in the solar/battery space. Several people asked me about the differences between the two shows. Here are the main distinctions I observed: 🔗 Different Supply Chains: While China dominates the Munich event with the largest booths, not many Chinese Tier 1 (PV modules, battery, and inverter) suppliers attended the American counterpart. Instead, Indian, Turkish, and Vietnamese players represented Asia. 📏 Event Size: Let's be honest: Intersolar US is much smaller than Europe's in terms of the number of booths and attendance. Still, as Sinovoltaics enters the US market, many insightful conversations took place. Also, since the event is in Downtown San Diego, it's much more convenient to meet people around the show. And better to have confidential business conversations. 🇺🇸 IRA (Inflation Reduction Act): The Inflation Reduction Act is everywhere. New American players are entering the industry, and international players are looking to establish local factories in Ohio, Texas, or North Carolina. Many consultants were there to support companies in getting the most out of this strategic legislation. 👷 Local Players: If you're accustomed to European EPCs, mounting structures, analytics software, and services, there's a good chance that you've never heard of most of the companies exhibiting in those fields at Intersolar North America. 🍺 🥨 Last but not least, free beers and pretzels were nowhere to be seen in the exhibition hall. That was a big shock for me. 😅 However, the Californian sunshine and palm trees make up for it. What do you think?

Rho Motion Live: Asia | BESS Market: A solution for every application?     BESS, often seen as the ‘younger sibling’ of the EV market, has in fact been the fastest growing battery market in recent times. With China continuing to lead growth, we expect just under 200GWh of new capacity in 2024.    Guiding this important conversation on the battery energy stationary storage market was Rho Motion's Head of Research Iola Hughes who discussed global trends and technology optimisation.     Iola was then joined by Sugiyanto Soh from Murata, Anvesh Madabushi from VFlowTech, and Kelly Liang from Sungrow Power Supply Co., Ltd. to discuss:    • Murata’s focus is on communication and automotive, but looking to enter the storage and medical markets.  • VFlowTech battery and micro grid in collaboration with EDPR and Schneider has decarbonized the island of Pulau Ubin, with a 1MWh system.  • Sungrow’s use of integrated Solar PV and energy storage, which takes advantage of the fluctuating electricity prices in Australia.    We will be publishing a full post-conference report on our Membership Platform.
