Safety in robotics is paramount, not just for the protection of individuals, but also for the smooth operation of industrial processes. Here's a continuation of important safety measures in robotic cells: 🛡️Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, helmets, gloves, and steel-toed boots, to minimize the risk of injury in case of accidents. 🛡️Implement proper training programs for all personnel working with or around robots to ensure they understand the potential hazards and know how to operate machinery safely. 🛡️Regularly inspect and maintain robotic equipment, including sensors, actuators, and emergency stop mechanisms, to prevent malfunctions and reduce the likelihood of accidents. 🛡️Establish clear protocols for communication and coordination between human operators and robotic systems to avoid misunderstandings and minimize the risk of collisions or other incidents. 🛡️Design robotic workspaces with safety in mind, incorporating features such as physical barriers, safety zones, and restricted access areas to prevent unauthorized entry and protect workers from harm. The mobility device hoping to stand up against the rest… Lithuanian-based company Chronus Robotics has come up with a new concept of mobility that mixes traditional wheelchairs with a segway-styled design. The two-wheeled, self-balancing Kim-e powered wheelchair extends its user to standing height at the push of a button. It also moves in the standing-height position and is not steered by joystick, but rather by the user's own upper body movements, allowing them to keep their hands free. At 59cm (23") wide it's more compact and maneuverable than a standard wheelchair, easily performing zero-turns. The Kim-e weighs 38kg (84 lbs), can climb a 20-degree slope and has a top speed of 20 km/h (12.4 mph). A four-hour charge is good for a 30km range. Optional extras include off-road tires, to accommodate different terrains. Chronus Robotics prefers to call their device "A self-balancing personal mobility robot", as opposed to a wheelchair. No prices have been announced as yet, and the company’s website is not taking pre-orders, so hopefully this doesn’t just remain a proof of concept. The customer was taking their first steps into the robotics zone and had many questions about safety. 😊 I informed them that we should not enter the robot area, which is marked with a yellow line and protected by safety scanners. The first question was: Is the line on the floor enough to protect people? Unfortunately, the answer was no. We also use a safety scanner to detect people near the robot. The next question was: How can we protect our operators? We have several options, including using a robot safety controller, safety scanners, curtains, barriers, guards, and covers. These measures depend on the distance and the time required to stop the robot and its parameters. The most important thing is that integration should be done correctly. Why? Because if we have a cell with a robot, the robot's operational area is larger than the cell. However, thanks to a safety controller, we can optimize our space, which is important for us. Without a safety robot controller, we would need to make a large cell considering all possible motions. For me, safety saving space with the Cubic-S safety controller by Kawasaki Robotics is the best solution. I think I want to write more about Cubic-S soon. - In production, robotic arms work independently of humans. There are restrictions that ban a person from working in the same room as robotic arms. A strong enough robotic arm can cause significant damage. What are you planning to do? - I believe I will first make it safe and then train it to collaborate with another person. An independent engine power management system is required. The CPU must be able to turn the motors on and off. If the CPU fails to respond to system demands, the system must disconnect power from the motors. Modern servo motors may convey the tilt angle. But can this data be trusted? Under dynamic loads, engines' physical characteristics vary. Backlashes occur. The readings transmitted by the engine no longer coincide with the real ones. We need external sensors that can display angle, acceleration, and direction. Before the flashing process, I specify the number of motors and arm lengths for computations. I think it must be removed. The robotic arm must diagnose itself. Calculate arm lengths, engine counts, allowable overloads, and speed restrictions. If the robotic arm loses stability, it must attempt to rebalance itself before the protective mechanisms are activated and the power is shut off. The video camera should be mounted behind the claw. When viewing an object from various perspectives, the robotic hand must learn how to interact with it. Sensors are required for the claws. Pressure sensors, laser rangefinder. It must be able to determine whether an object in the claw has lost stability. Then it will become intriguing. #robotics
