Imagine you reach a point in your career where you stop developing as a professional; what do you do and how do you get back on that upward trajectory? For Clifford Mascarenhas, choosing growth over comfort meant leaving a prestigious role with V.Group as Chief Marine Mechanical Engineer, a role he had worked up to over a decade. He started as a 1st Assistant Marine Engineer and eventually gained an incredible array of responsibilities. It was a great position but Clifford's goal was to get a job at Seaspan ULC, British Columbia’s largest ship builder and solutions provider to the maritime industry. “I had advanced in my career as far as I could, and I recognized that going back to school would enable me to pursue new opportunities by expanding my knowledge of ship-building,” he says. “UBC’s program in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering offered more than other comparable programs because of its combination of technical and business courses. Engineers need to understand how business decisions are arrived at, and this program helps engineers move into leadership positions by helping them correlate the technical and business aspects.” In March of 2024, Clifford received an offer from Seaspan ULC to work as an Integrated Logistic Support Specialist, with responsibilities that include analyzing the reliability, availability and maintenance aspects of design for the joint support vessels that Seaspan is delivering to the Canadian Coast Guard/Garde côtière canadienne and Royal Canadian Navy | Marine royale canadienne under Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy. It's hot, isn't it? During my internship at PRIO I had contact with engineering in practice. One of those most interesting moments was when I visited the engine room of a platform supply vessel (PSV). This is a vessel specially designed to supply offshore oil and gas platforms and other offshore installations. During the instruction I realized in practice one of the biggest challenges of a engine room: thermal control. In aerospace engineering, thermal control of satellites and rockets is very important, as very high or very low temperatures could damage or reduce the performance of the equipment. In space it is very difficult to correct a temperature problem and therefore temperature control systems need to be thoroughly tested on earth. Similarly, at sea correcting a temperature problem is a challenge and that is why rooms like this on a ship need to be very well developed on land. #engineering #temperature #technology #ship #vessel #aerospace #thermalcontrol #machine

Hello Network. Today I had an opportunity to visit Farnborough International Air Show. I want to share the key highlights of what I got up to today Main highlights: I had a wonderful talk with MBDA about what they do and the opportunities I should look out for next academic year. I was really interested in the summer placements especially, this is one thing that I should look out for next year. Afterwards I was also introduced to NILEQ, they want to provide resilient absolute postitioning for every airborne platform. I spoke to the inventor of the event camera (neuromorphic camera) which is used by tracing the ground to process the absolute position. A neuromorphic fingerprint is used to match the database, as a result it will produce an accurate position where you are located. This was my favourite highlight of today as it taught me not just the creativity behind widening aviation but also problem solving ideas and ways to exploit in programming to access key data. I was later on introduced to NATS where I used used AI and Air Traffic management to direct planes to their specific regions. This reminds me of when I had to write a report on Air Traffic Management with a chosen database. Finally, after having completed a course with GE Aerospace In exploring engineering. I attended a talk. I spent time taking part in flight stimulations and looking at commercial engines such as the GE9X which has a bypass ratio of 10.1. This stood out to me as I made a presentation of bypass ratio, compression ratio and trade offs in turbofans prior to this. I learnt that there are different parts of the programme which lead into one but you will have a differnet starting point to someone else, you can be disadvantaged at something, for instance the Finance Sector of GE Aerospace but you will end up loving it. This promotes resilience in engineers who aspire to change challenges in aviation.
