Human rights issues as well as IUU fishing are well-documented in the tuna industry. Consequently, much of FishWise’s work focuses on these complex supply chains, with vessels often operating in remote areas. This World Tuna Day, May 2, we are highlighting how FishWise is pushing businesses to build more ethical tuna supply chains. Here's how: https://lnkd.in/gY6RMWZ3

👥 The European Union and the Government of Guinea-Bissau have begun the first round of negotiations for the renewal of the protocol of the #sustainable #fishing agreement. 🚢 🐟 Around twenty Spanish trawling #vessels to catch #shellfish and #cephalopod trawling and #Tuna seiners with freezing capabilities operate in this zone. 🎣 ❌ The actual protocol expires on June 14th. There are no other alternatives in the area since the EU does not have fishing agreements with other countries. https://lnkd.in/dak2d64b

Over 1.6 billion kilos ~ 3.6 billion pounds of waste collected by Ocean Integrity Global Remember we only have one Ocean 🌊 Social Enterprise 🚮 ♻️ kkelly@oceanintegrity.org oceanintegrity.org +1-614-800-2165
The enforcement of marine protected areas in the high seas poses a significant challenge due to jurisdictional issues and the lack of a centralized governing body to oversee these vast expanses of international waters. While some view the establishment of such areas as a financial boon for NGOs seeking funding, the effectiveness of these efforts remains questionable without a more comprehensive solution. One potential approach could involve the expansion of countries' Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) to cover a larger portion of the ocean, thereby reducing the expanse of international waters and facilitating better enforcement mechanisms. Balancing the objectives of conservation, sustainability, and food security in the context of marine resource management is crucial, requiring a delicate interplay of international cooperation and strategic planning to address these complex challenges effectively.
Our investigations have found the 🇨🇳 fishing fleet is responsible for systemic illegal fishing & human rights abuses in the Southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO). Fish caught with these abuses in the SWIO may end up in the US, EU, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. We need more scrutiny of China's investments in the SWIO, including from market states who risk importing their products. Our consumption must no longer drive environmental destruction and human rights abuses – transparency is key to ensuring we know where the fish on market shelves is coming from. Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) constant work for the last years to expose the permanent violations of Human Rights and IUU fishing by the Chinese fleet, is very important because it generates the conscience in the Western World markets about Chinese seafood trading. But unfortunately, one gets totally dishearted whne reads things like this published by SeafoodSource: "The Xiamen Maritime Tribunal ordered the Jinjiang Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs to restore the payment of subsidies because distant-water fishing is a “strategic national industry for building a community of shared future for the ocean” and for the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative. The initiative is a Chinese foreign policy blueprint that calls for connecting China to global markets through infrastructure and trade, including through trading in seafood." Very difficult to make China move in the right direction, because if market gets hard, they come back by banning imports into China.......Complex relationship, but in the meantime, the Chinese fleets keep progrssing at other's cost.

In this perspective, I argue that Vietnam has taken significant steps to address the issue of IUU fishing, motivated not only by the desire to have the EC yellow card in 2017 lifted, but also to transition towards a more sustainable fishing industry, enhance its international reputation, and affirm its commitment to a rules-based international order. However, Vietnam continues to face multifaceted challenges. These include the lack of an effective surveillance system, inadequate enforcement capabilities, and the need to maintain a robust fishing fleet to counteract China’s “grey zone” tactics in the South China Sea. Addressing the issue of IUU fishing will contribute to a more sustainable fishing industry, improve the livelihoods of millions of fishermen, drive economic growth, and strengthen Vietnam’s efforts in protecting its maritime sovereignty. Norwegian Environment Agency to further restrict salmon fishing in 2025 : The Norwegian Environment Agency (Miljødirektoratet) has announced plans to impose stricter regulations on salmon fishing starting from the 2025 season, particularly in rivers that have experienced low salmon returns in recent years. Following record low salmon numbers and catches early in this year's season, the agency halted fishing in 33 rivers and adjacent marine areas in southern Norway. https://lnkd.in/dZFk4dJc

POLAND The prohibition on fishing for cod in the southern Baltic has forced whitefish processing companies in Poland through a wrenching period of adaptation. Some have switched to processing other species, others now use Atlantic cod, while a few buy farmed cod which they process and export. The raw material challenges faced by processors have also resulted in more collaboration between companies that also compete with each other. The reason is twofold: there are fewer companies than before, and because companies are smaller they may not have the capacity to handle a large order, so splitting it between two is better than losing it altogether. Perch is one of the species that companies are processing for overseas markets in the absence of cod. Fresh and frozen fillets of perch are in demand on markets in Switzerland and France. #eurofishmagazine #poland #fishprocessing #eurofishint #cod #perch

Peruvian anchovy executive warns about problems in country’s south fishing zone A top executive in Peru’s anchovy sector has warned that the country’s south anchovy-fishing zone is in peril and should be a point of emphasis for the nation’s seafood industry at large when determining the most important issues to address in 2024. Peru divides its anchovy-fishing areas into two regions – south and north-central – with different capture limits and seasons set for each. The north-central zone is Peru’s main fishing region, with capture measuring several times that of the south region. Peru’s anchoveta fishery encountered major problems ...
