News of Firefly Aerospace competing to provide National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) launch capabilities is very positive. The SLIC-program it falls under, however, has a mixed record with the first task order having gone to bankrupt early space SPAC Virgin Orbit. "The SLIC program is projected to award about $700 million in task orders over 10 years. 🚀 Witnessing History in the Making! 🚀 I had the incredible opportunity to watch the Falcon 9 launch of Turksat on 07/08/24 at the Kennedy Space Center. It was a truly awe-inspiring experience to see the power and precision of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket up close. The Falcon 9, first launched in 2010, has revolutionized space travel with its reusability and cost-effectiveness. Some key technical details about the Falcon 9 include: - Height: 70 meters (229.6 feet) - Diameter: 3.7 meters (12 feet) - Mass: 549,054 kg (1,207,920 lb) - Payload to LEO: 22,800 kg (50,265 lb) - Payload to GTO: 8,300 kg (18,300 lb) - Thrust (at liftoff): 7,607 kN (1,710,000 lbf) from nine Merlin engines The rocket's first stage is designed for reusability, with a landing capability that has allowed it to be reused multiple times, significantly reducing the cost of access to space. The second stage is powered by a single Merlin Vacuum engine, optimized for performance in the vacuum of space. Over the years, Falcon 9 has played a pivotal role in launching satellites, resupplying the ISS, and advancing human spaceflight with the Crew Dragon missions. [Firefly Aerospace scrubs Alpha rocket launch set for Dec. 20 due to weather] Firefly Aerospace plans to launch its fourth-ever mission today (Dec. 20), and you can watch the action live. The company's Alpha rocket is scheduled to lift off from California's Vandenberg Space Force Base today during a 20-minute window that opens at 12:24 p.m. EST (1724 GMT; 9:24 a.m. local California time), kicking off a mission that Firefly calls "Fly the Lightning." The launch was delayed by six minutes "to support optimal ground tracking for the mission", Firefly officials wrote on X, formerly Twitter. You can watch the launch live via Firefly and its streaming partner, NASASpaceflight.com. Coverage will begin an hour before the window opens. Fly the Lightning will send an electronically steerable antenna (ESA) payload developed by aerospace giant Lockheed Martin to low Earth orbit. Space Systems Command's Space Domain Awareness (SDA) Tools, Applications, and Processing (TAP) Lab, in collaboration with industry partners and the Cross Mission Data Branch under BMC3 achieved mission success for Apollo Accelerator Cohort 2 on March 4, 2024. Among the achievements, True Anomaly successfully tracked payloads deployed by SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, with Intrack Radar Technologies accurately predicting the rocket's trajectory. This success highlights the effectiveness of structured programs like the Apollo Accelerator in fostering collaboration and innovation within the space industry. The Apollo Accelerator Cohort 2 is kicking of another Demo Day tomorrow to showcase new capabilities. Problems are coordinated with space defense operators and then shared across many missions. Preventing operational surprise, denying the first mover advantage, and responsible counterspace campaigning is a team sport. Exciting news from the Space Development Agency (SDA)! 🚀 In a groundbreaking achievement, the SDA has successfully demonstrated space-to-ground data communications from low Earth orbit satellites. Link 16 terminals on three Tranche 0 Transport Layer satellites, launched by SpaceX earlier this year, communicated with radios on the ground in three recent demonstrations. This milestone is part of SDA's ambitious Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, aiming to build a space data network and deploy an internet in space, facilitating seamless data transfer between satellites and military systems on Earth, at sea, and in flight.
