The Seaport Days Amsterdam are in full swing, highlighting the important role Amsterdam Port (the largest #cocoa port in the world) plays on a global level. A closer look at the sector, however, shows it's not always smooth sailing: production is falling across West Africa, making it harder to meet global demand, particularly if we want to create a climate-resilient flow of #sustainablecocoa. To that end, we recently organized a roundtable on these topics with Wageningen University & Research. Nearly 70 participants, including cocoa traders, producers, and processors from four continents, as well as representatives from the Dutch government, gathered to discuss the root causes and ways the #privatesector can enhance the situation. #WestAfrica, the world’s leading cocoa-producing region, is grappling with a structural supply problem. This crisis has far-reaching implications for the entire industry and West African economies, with farmers bearing the brunt. As production falters, their income dwindles despite high prices, making it difficult to sustain themselves, invest in aging plantations, and build resilience against future climate shocks. Addressing these challenges requires dedicated action from all parties, including regulatory authorities and governments. Improving the situation for farmers is crucial for the sustainability of the cocoa industry in West Africa. Collaborative efforts from the private sector are essential to support West African farmers and secure the future of cocoa production. Thank you to panelists for sharing their perspectives and insights, as well as to our partner Wageningen University & Research! We look forward to continue strengthening the cocoa value chain with our customers and partners, ensuring that everyone across the world can continue to receive and enjoy sustainably-sourced, responsible cocoa. 'Paying more for sustainable cocoa’ is the theme of the fifth World Cocoa Conference, taking place in Brussels next week. The first conference, in 2018, concluded with the Berlin Declaration, which stated: “the cocoa sector will not be sustainable if farmers are not able to earn a living income”. Later that year, Beyond Chocolate - the Belgian Initiative for a more sustainable cocoa sector - was established. Since then: 🍫 Over 70 Belgian companies in the cocoa sector have committed to enabling living incomes in their value chains by 2030 🍫 15% of farmers in the value chains of the Beyond Chocolate signatories are covered by holistic living income strategies 🍫 The pilot projects financed under the initiative have reached over 12,000 farmers 🍫 New living income products have appeared on Belgian shelves. These are valuable first steps that reveal a new market dynamic. As coordinator of both Beyond Chocolate and the Dutch Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa, IDH will ensure that ambitions on living income remain high and more impact will be generated. 💡 International trade is at the heart of the Dutch economy. Strengthening and making our supply chains more sustainable is primarily the responsibility of the business community, but this is not possible without support from the government. This was the core of the message we sent alongside 45 companies and organisations to the newly sworn-in Members of Parliament in the Netherlands this week. The jointly signed letter highlighted the importance of global trade in sustainably produced agricultural commodities for the future of the Netherlands and for our partners in producing countries. With the letter, a box containing products from some of our Dutch partners was delivered, offering food for thought on the national importance of international trade chains. These companies actively collaborate with IDH in a myriad of ways, all with the aim of increasing sustainability in agriculture supply chains. Such products are the fruit of sustainable production and showcase the importance of close cooperation and collaboration in the global markets to create better jobs, better livelihoods and a better environment, with gender equity. It’s crucial we continue to raise awareness for the importance of global trade in sustainably produced agricultural commodities for the mutual benefit of both the Netherlands and our partners. 👉 Check the comments for the link to the letter. #grondstoftotnadenken #foodforthought #sustainabletrade #internationaltrade Adomex International B.V. 🌍 The EU-Thailand FTA and Its Impact on the EU Starch Industry 🌍 The next round of negotiations on a EU Free Trade Agreement with Thailand are approaching. Starch Europe is following these negotiations very closely, and is extremely concerned over potential tariff concessions on tapioca-based starches and derivatives. Thailand is the world's largest producer and exporter of tapioca starch, benefiting from lower production costs and heavy government support, thus putting EU producers at a significant competitive disadvantage. Learn more about our position and the potential implications in our latest position paper. https://lnkd.in/gR-3bebg #EUThailandFTA #StarchIndustry #Competitiveness

⁉️ How to get ready for EUDR? 📎 The European Union Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR) aims to protect forests by banning the sale and import of certain product types, including coffee, that might have been produced on deforested land. 🌳 It will start to apply End of December 2024. ‼️ As of that date, producers and companies placing these commodities on the European market will have to provide data to prove that they comply with the new regulation. HRNS colleagues Anika Nicolaudius and Malte Fähnders spent two days in Brussels, Belgium participating in the co-creation event “Empowering Smallholders: Co-Creating Digital Approaches for Inclusive Coffee Supply Chains under the EUDR”. The working group of around 50 participants from international organizations, coffee cooperatives, and industry shed light on the challenges and opportunities of the new regulation and discussed possible solutions. The co-creation workshop was held by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH Project Sustainable Agriculture for Forest Ecosystems (SAFE), Initiative für nachhaltige Agrarlieferketten, the GIZ Digital Integration of Agricultural Supply Chains Alliance (DIASCA), the International Coffee Organization, The Alliance of Bioversity & CIAT and Producers Direct. #TeamEurope #EU #GlobalGateway #Deforestationfree #ValueChains #EUDR #CoCreating #DataDrivenSolutions #SustainableAgriculture #SustainableCoffee #TransitionToSustainability

Peru’s Ambassador to T&T, David Francisco Málaga who described the country as one of the region’s top agricultural producers, wants to see increased trade with T&T in this area. “It’s a huge greenhouse. In the last five years, Peru maintained the highest annual growth rate in non-traditional exports in the region with an average annual expansion of 8.8 per cent, mainly in agricultural products. Our non-traditional exports reached a record high of US$10.42 billion in 2022. Peru has become an important supplier of food to the main markets around the world. We are among the top 20 biggest fruit and vegetable producers in the world,” Málaga said. https://lnkd.in/e9bckgvG

Global cocoa production has nearly doubled in the past 30 years, but all actors in the supply chain must now participate in local and international organisations to ensure that this growth remains sustainable. As members of the European Cocoa Association (ECA), we spoke with Matthijs de Meer, ECA Senior Manager of EU Affairs and Sustainability, about the complexities of the cocoa supply chain, the recently adopted regulation on deforestation-free commodities, and the association's initiatives. “The cocoa supply chain is highly complex. The ECA explains the complexities of our industry to key political stakeholders in EU institutions, which work on relevant legislation,” said Matthijs We also ‘translate’ the EU's complexities - such as the recently adopted regulation on deforestation-free commodities - to our members,” he added.
