Good article in Forbes about the problems of mega-farms, pointing out that in most cases these farms are not as efficient as they claim to be. The article starts with the story of one farm that instead of getting bigger, got smaller and reaped the benefits of being independent and growing food mostly without pesticides and raising animals in their natural settings. “I feel a lot more hope in what I’m doing now than what I’ve spent the last 30 years doing,” Watkins says. He also worries about what will happen with fewer and fewer people growing fewer and fewer types of crops: “If we continue on this path, we really aren’t going to need small towns anymore. The article goes on to talk about the changes needed to this system, from advocacy and policy changes, to individual changes. Many younger farmers are adopting regenerative practices and abandoning the industrial farming model. Consumers are looking for more choices, for food that is not raised on mega-farms. What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)? Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a model that connects farmers directly with consumers, fostering a partnership that benefits both. In a CSA, individuals or families purchase a share of the farm’s harvest in advance, which helps cover the farm’s operational costs. In return, they receive fresh, seasonal produce throughout the growing season. Why Choose CSA? 1. Freshness: Enjoy farm-fresh fruits and vegetables picked at their peak. 2. Local Support: Strengthen local economies by supporting small-scale farmers. 3. Sustainability: Reduce your carbon footprint with locally grown produce and minimal packaging. How Does It Work? 1. Subscription: Purchase a share or subscription from a local farm. 2. Harvest: Receive weekly or bi-weekly deliveries of produce. 3. Community: Engage with the farm through events and updates. CSA models can vary, including options for vegetables, fruits, dairy, and even meat. It's a great way to ensure you’re eating nutritious, locally sourced food while supporting sustainable farming practices. Want to see how CSA is part of our self-sustainable city project? A New Horizon for UK Farmers. The future of farming is evolving, and cultivated animal products present an opportunity for UK farmers. We believe in harnessing innovation to create a sustainable food system. Cultivated meat not only reduces environmental impact but also opens new avenues for farmers. By integrating cultivated meat production, farmers can diversify their income streams. They can also supply essential ingredients for growth media or even convert existing infrastructure for bioproduction. This shift supports a resilient agricultural sector, ensuring farmers remain integral to our food future. Read more about the potential of cultivated meat for farmers in this article from FoodNavigator: https://bit.ly/4dnWN6l #cultivatedanimalproducts #cellularagriculture #foodsystems #foodtech

Could millions of maggots be the secret to sustainable farming? 🌱🐛 At the cutting edge of agricultural innovation, Unreasonable Fellow, Keiran Olivares Whitaker and his venture, Entocycle, are making significant strides in sustainable farming right under the railway arches of London Bridge. Their facility, a hub of innovation, breeds millions of insects to convert urban food waste into nutrient-rich feed for farm animals. Why insects? The answer lies in their efficiency and sustainability. Entocycle's use of black soldier flies not only diminishes the reliance on imported soy—a major cause of deforestation—but also harnesses natural processes to improve animal health and reduce aggressive behaviors linked to synthetic diets. As global events affect feed prices and availability, Entocycle's work is more important than ever. Their automated technology aims to scale across the UK, promising a new standard in farming practices. Organic Farming: Insights from Rural Farmers on the Ground There’s been growing momentum around encouraging farmers to adopt organic practices as part of regenerative agriculture, a movement we strongly advocate for at the Durian Foundation. However, my recent conversation with cassava farmers within the Durian network in one of the communities we serve highlighted the real challenges they face in making this shift. I spoke passionately about the environmental benefits of going organic—preserving biodiversity and reducing pollution. Yet, the farmers shared their perspective on why it’s not always sustainable for them. One of the biggest hurdles is cost. Organic farming requires manual weeding, which needs to be done 3-4 times before cassava harvesting. This significantly increases their labor expenses and eats into their already slim profit margins. I suggested using equipment like weed cutters to ease the burden, but they laughed and asked, "Who will give us the money to buy it?" They also mentioned difficulties in accessing basic tools like tractors and improved cassava stems. Additionally, they raised concerns about managing diseases that might attack their cassava plants. Their final question was poignant: "Who will pay for all this when we go through the stress?" This conversation was a humbling reminder that while organic farming is undoubtedly beneficial, the solutions we advocate must align with the lived realities of farmers. If we truly want them to go organic, we must address the question of cost. At the Durian Foundation, we’re committed to supporting farmers through our agricultural programs by providing tools and resources. To scale this impact, we need unrestricted funding to cover the purchase of farm machines and tools. This investment would ease the burden on farmers, making organic farming more affordable and practical, while also leading to improved yields, better health outcomes for the farmers, and long-term environmental sustainability. Let’s bridge the gap between good intentions and practical solutions for our rural farmers. 🌾🚜🐄 #OrganicFarming #SustainableAgriculture #RegenerativeAgriculture #RuralDevelopment #FarmersPerspective #AgricultureInnovation #SustainableFarming #SupportFarmers #EnvironmentalSustainability #DurianFoundation #CassavaFarming #FarmingChallenges #AgriculturalSupport #GreenAgriculture #FarmersVoice #TonyJoy #Day21
