This week's blog post by FACT's Steve Roach is a continuation of our post last week that focused on how the US is undermining international efforts to reduce death and sickness from antimicrobial resistance. Next week on September 26, the United Nations (UN) will convene the second High-Level Meeting on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) with the aim of getting countries to make commitments to take steps to reduce the number of deaths and increased illnesses caused by the spread of drug-resistant germs. The U.S. government instead of pushing for strong international targets to reduce the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture has worked to weaken them. The U.S. could be a real leader when it comes to protecting public health around antibiotic resistance, but that would mean putting the interests of people ahead of the giant meat industry with all its wealth and political power. FACT will continue to push the U.S. government to become the leader it could be.

As we approach the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), the urgency to address this global health threat has never been clearer. The zero draft of the political declaration targets a 10% reduction in global deaths caused by bacterial AMR by 2030, using 2019 as a baseline. Dr. Jean Kaseya of Africa CDC revealed the dire situation in Africa, where only 1.3% of labs can perform bacterial resistance testing, leading to underreported data. Despite efforts by the African Union Assembly to control AMR, less than 10% of member states have fully funded national action plans. Professor Sally Davies, UK Special Envoy on AMR, stressed the importance of addressing the needs of the most vulnerable communities and ensuring equitable access to antibiotics and diagnostics for low- and middle-income countries. It's imperative that global leaders and organizations collaborate to implement these measures and secure a healthier future for all. #AntimicrobialResistance #GlobalHealth #AMR #SustainableHealth #PublicHealth #WHA #GlobalLeadersGroup World Health Organization The Global Fund FAO United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI)

https://lnkd.in/gBDUhCNE As Bayer reps are spruiking how safe US food is, this paper comes out, suggesting quite the opposite. Does this sound safe to you "Chlormequat was detected at low concentrations in samples from 2017 through 2022, with a significant increase in concentrations for samples from 2023. We also observed high detection frequencies of chlormequat in oat-based foods. These findings and chlormequat toxicity data raise concerns about current exposure levels, and warrant more expansive toxicity testing, food monitoring, and epidemiological studies to assess health effects of chlormequat exposures in humans."

Today, the EU Standing Committee (#SCoPAFF) votes on lowering acetamiprid’s exposure limits in food following new evidence. Last week, we sent a letter urging SCoPAFF to endorse this move due to the serious developmental neurotoxicity risks posed by acetamiprid, especially in children. We support this proposal as a first step, but we also urge a complete ban on acetamiprid to fully protect human health and the environment. Now is the time to prioritise public health over harmful #pesticides. Learn more from our letter: https://lnkd.in/e9gTVzT9

Recently, we rounded up a really productive in-person meeting with IPA Europe to reflect on regulatory topics and amplify our advocacy voice at both the European and national levels. We discussed critical issues such as the recent updates on Member States' practices and the use of 'probiotic' in #Europe, as well as several scientific and regulatory topics including the contributions to #EFSA consultations; our industry welcomes the recent updates to the EC Novel Food Catalogue! Delving into the recent updates in the European probiotic market, we’re aligned on the need for the European Commission to consider new evidence and provide a clearer rationale on #probiotics. A huge thank you to all members for promoting credible and reliable probiotic food and supplement resources. Let's continue to combat misinformation and ensure public trust! 🙌🔬 #Probiotics #Regulation #EFSA #EuropeanCommission #PublicHealth #Advocacy #Science #Nutrition

Ahead of the United Nations General Assembly's second ever high-level meeting on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) later this month, investors representing more than $13 trn in combined assets have called on global leaders to ramp up efforts to tackle the AMR crisis. Investor Action on AMR (IAAMR) is behind the call to action. Addressing the importance to control #AMR Following the 2nd High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance, a political declaration has been drafted committing to a clear set of targets and actions to keep AMR under control. "The declaration emphasizes key aspects, including the importance of access to medicines, treatments and diagnostics, while calling for incentives and financing mechanisms to drive multisectoral health research, innovation and development in addressing AMR. A stronger, transparent partnership between the public and private sectors, as well as academia is critical." Yes, this is important! https://lnkd.in/eSNF7eZi

We are at Goodwood Health Summit where world-leading experts have joined to discuss topics and trends such as antimicrobial resistance! 💊 Did you know Randox Food Diagnostics provide innovative testing solutions which aim to help milk processors supply safe and EU regulated milk? Antibiotics are commonly used to prevent disease and bacterial infections within cattle. However, if used extensively, acceptable antibiotic levels can be exceeded and lead to harmful consequences further along the food chain if the milk is ingested by humans. To help the dairy industry monitor antibiotics within milk, Randox Food Diagnostics have developed the InfiniPlex for Milk which offers comprehensive and simultaneous screening using our revolutionary Biochip Array Technology.
