As we approach the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), the urgency to address this global health threat has never been clearer. The zero draft of the political declaration targets a 10% reduction in global deaths caused by bacterial AMR by 2030, using 2019 as a baseline. Dr. Jean Kaseya of Africa CDC revealed the dire situation in Africa, where only 1.3% of labs can perform bacterial resistance testing, leading to underreported data. Despite efforts by the African Union Assembly to control AMR, less than 10% of member states have fully funded national action plans. Professor Sally Davies, UK Special Envoy on AMR, stressed the importance of addressing the needs of the most vulnerable communities and ensuring equitable access to antibiotics and diagnostics for low- and middle-income countries. It's imperative that global leaders and organizations collaborate to implement these measures and secure a healthier future for all. #AntimicrobialResistance #GlobalHealth #AMR #SustainableHealth #PublicHealth #WHA #GlobalLeadersGroup World Health Organization The Global Fund FAO United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI)

This week's blog post by FACT's Steve Roach is a continuation of our post last week that focused on how the US is undermining international efforts to reduce death and sickness from antimicrobial resistance. Next week on September 26, the United Nations (UN) will convene the second High-Level Meeting on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) with the aim of getting countries to make commitments to take steps to reduce the number of deaths and increased illnesses caused by the spread of drug-resistant germs. The U.S. government instead of pushing for strong international targets to reduce the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture has worked to weaken them. The U.S. could be a real leader when it comes to protecting public health around antibiotic resistance, but that would mean putting the interests of people ahead of the giant meat industry with all its wealth and political power. FACT will continue to push the U.S. government to become the leader it could be.

🚀 We are excited to announce the launch of our aflatoxins awareness training in collaboration with Biofoods , under the Safe Milk campaign funded by USAID 🥛✨ Aflatoxins are toxic compounds produced by certain molds found in food, which can pose serious health risks. These dangers include: Liver Damage: Prolonged exposure can lead to liver cancer and other liver diseases. Immune Suppression: Aflatoxins can weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections. Growth Impairment: In children, exposure to aflatoxins can stunt growth and development. Nutritional Deficiencies: Contaminated food can lead to a lack of essential nutrients. Our goal is to empower farmers and consumers with the knowledge to detect and prevent aflatoxin contamination, ensuring safer milk production and consumption. Stay tuned as we roll out this crucial training program and work together towards a healthier, safer future! 🌾🐄 #AflatoxinsAwareness #SafeMilkCampaign #Biofoods #USAID #DigiCow #FoodSafety #Health #Agriculture

At the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held this week in New York, UN Member States have reached a Political Declaration aimed at tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Antimicrobial resistance is one of the greatest global health threats facing the planet, directly causing over one million deaths annually. To combat this urgent health issue, Member States have established a Political Declaration at UNGA to fight AMR across all sectors through a ‘One Health’ approach. This type of approach considers that human, animal and environmental health are intrinsically linked. Stella Kyriakides, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, explained: “This Political Declaration is a strong signal of the global commitment to address antimicrobial resistance – a significant and evolving health threat to every person, community and country. “The Declaration puts a much-needed spotlight on AMR. We now need to turn these commitments into real actions and intensify our global collaboration in tackling AMR. We are at a turning point that could define the health and well-being of future generations.” https://lnkd.in/eFh4Z5dr #amr #unitednations #un #health #antimicrobialresistance

Recent events linked to COVID-19 pandemic have underlined the priority to be given to the food security in terms of preparedness to mitigate the disruption of the food chains. Within this frame, the burden of disease in meat plant workers represented a critical control point, to be evaluated also in light of the next “X disease” pandemics – avian flue? Within a One Health frame, in Italy we propose a Target Prevention Plan as advocacy action to improve the awareness of Food Business Operators about multiple facets of preventive measures in meat plants, to confere resilience to the food chain. In the publication “COVID-19 in meat plants: a survey framed within a Target Prevention Plan, in Italy” published on Ann Ist Super Sanità 2024 60(3):171-178 https://lnkd.in/d9yxQPw2 we illustrate the results of two questionnaires administered on voluntary basis to Italian Meat Plant Owners, and to National Health System Preventive Medicine Departments, at local level. Results suggest to maintain a continous preventive action in such settings.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health crisis, causing five million deaths annually worldwide, with about 60,000 deaths in Pakistan alone. Improper use of antimicrobials in humans and animals has led to the rise of resistant microbes, posing a significant challenge to public health. The Pakistan Ministry of National Food Security and Research, with the support of DAI-led Department of Health and Social Care Fleming Fund Country Grant Pakistan, initiated a pilot surveillance study to establish AMR surveillance systems in healthy food animals. A policy brief titled "Addressing Antimicrobial Resistance in Pakistan" has been produced presenting the findings and recommendations from this study. Key findings include: • Extremely high resistance to various antibiotics in both cattle/buffalo and poultry isolates. • Geographically elevated levels of resistance across all provinces of Pakistan. • Seasonal variations in resistance patterns, highlighting the need for tailored interventions.
