Greener Village is spearheading Atlantic Canada’s first dedicated Perishable Food Rescue Centre, designed to repurpose fruits, vegetables, and other perishable goods that would otherwise be discarded. CEO Alex Boyd unveiled plans for the facility, which will transform recovered fresh produce into ready-to-eat and frozen meals. These nutritious offerings will be sourced from local farmers, surplus retailers, and collaborative efforts with agencies like Food Banks Canada | Banques alimentaires Canada and Food Depot Alimentaire. This pioneering approach not only amplifies Greener Village's capacity to feed more individuals but also ensures that 60% of the contents in every grocery box consist of fresh items, while simultaneously diverting significant quantities of food from landfills. The undertaking, projected at $6 million, is slated to commence construction in September. Fundraising initiatives commence on May 8, providing an opportunity for community members to contribute and bolster this impactful endeavor aimed at addressing food insecurity in our region. 💥GOOD NEWS THIS WEEK 💥 🎯 Daiya Foods Inc launched its updated vegan cheese lineup that are made from a base of its oat cream and using traditional fermentation techniques to better mimic dairy cheese. This technology is done in its British Columbia facility, which it claims is “the largest standalone plant-based facility of its kind in North America”. ⭐️ Holland & Barrett partners with Olio • Share More, Waste Less to fight food waste by redistributing spare, good-to-eat food that includes surplus from its range ‘food that loves you back’. This is an impactful way to support local communities and reducing Holland and Barrett’s environmental footprint through food waste reduction. ⭐️ Marks and Spencer announced that as of this year, it has donated 70 million meals to local charities with their food redistribution partner Neighbourly, to more than 3,000 local charities and community organisations. ⚡️ UK Government confirmed plans to implement its ban on forest risk commodities linked to illegal deforestation overseas. This band was included in the Environment Act and will apply to all organisations with a global turnover of at least £50m where palm oil, cocoa, soy and cattle products are covered by this new rule. ⚡️ The European Union through its European Innovation Council Work Programme 2024 has committed €50 million to aid startups and small businesses in scaling alternative protein production. This aims to improve sustainability, efficiency and resilience of the European food supply chain. ⚡️ The Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO) initiated the process of developing a global roadmap to eliminate hunger and all forms of malnutrition without exceeding the 1.5°C threshold set by the Paris Agreement. Probably no, but you never know was the overall conclusion. 💰A key area to consider is economic stability, government investment and regulation. Asking for help is a sign of weakness. This is what I used to think. 🤔 Why I felt that way is something I'll probably have to work through with a therapist, but what I have realised over the last couple of weeks is that people inherently want to help each other. 💡 I started ReFeed because I wanted to help food banks, farmers, food companies, the community and even government - through the work that we do creating circular food systems. Helping to fix broken pieces of our food system. 🙏 But when I asked for help to save ReFeed, I felt embarrassed, ashamed, worthless. How crazy is that? I did it anyways and the outpouring of support has been amazing. I didn't realise how much people connect with ReFeed, yet it's exactly what I hoped would happen from day one. After numerous conversations with some old and some new LI connections over the last two weeks, I was encouraged to start a Go Fund Me Campaign to help raise much needed funds. Through our hunger-relief platform, Food Lion Feeds, we nourish neighbors in need all year long. In 2022, Food Lion associates volunteered more than 17,000 hours, equivalent to more than 5 million meals.   In collaboration with community feeding partners, we also help address food insecurity across our 10-state footprint through food rescue efforts. All 1,108 Food Lion stores distribute unsold, edible food – fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy products and shelf-stable items – that might otherwise go to waste to partner food organizations. In 2022, we provided more than 62 million pounds, or 51 million meals.   The work we’re doing in the towns and cities we serve is also receiving national recognition. Food Lion Feeds received the 2023 Impact Award from Progressive Grocer in three categories: Community Service/Local Impact, Food Security/Nutritional Leadership and Sustainability/Resource Conservation. Awards are presented to companies leading the way in making a tangible difference in the grocery industry and our communities.   We appreciate the honor and will continue to do our part so fewer people have to choose between dinner and rent or gas and groceries.
