Really enjoyed attending "The Power of Purpose: Exploring the Basics of Business Community Engagement" hosted by Richmond Chamber of Commerce, InUnison, United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg, and Community Foundation yesterday. My key takeaways: 1) Business Community Engagement has so many positive ripple effects on the company, volunteers/employees, and community. Engagement begets more engagement which begets even more engagement and small actions add up. 2) The business case for Community Engagement is strong. From retention to recruiting to marketing, it's also a great financial investment. For all my L+D friends, it was also a great reminder that the best learning is often very simple. Community is invited to join a new Burnie Works Action Group for the Middle Years Project. Last year, Communities for Children Burnie and Burnie Works explored how families of primary school-aged children access and navigate supports in Burnie. The aim: to co-design a product or service to meet community needs. We call it the Middle Years project. It is for families with children aged 5 to 12 years (Prep to Year 6). 🔸NEXT STEP: Build an Action Group to help guide us as we move into the next stage - turning your ideas into reality! We are holding a 'Come and Try' workshop on Thursday 7 March. This will give you a chance to come and see what it's about. It will be an opportunity to dip your toes in and see if it’s right for you – no pressure. 🔸DETAILS🔸 📆When: Thursday 7 March ⏰Time: 10am to 1pm 🏠Location: Burnie Surf Life Saving Club Facilitated by Fiona Miller, grassroots worker, and facilitator. Yummy morning tea. Safe and welcoming space. We have $100,000 to create something that the community wants and has designed. We will trial and test this work and collect the data to inform change for the future. Imagine if we design something here in Burnie that changes people’s lives, and we get to keep it going! 📣This week's good practice comes from Antwerpen in Belgium where the city focused its efforts on creating inclusive public playgrounds for youth. 🎯Realizing that children with special needs often cannot participate in outdoor activities because the activities are not adapted to their needs, made the city carry out this important project. Good practice 'Exclusive where necessary, inclusive where possible' was designed to help children and young people with special needs.  The process started with parents meeting and sharing their needs and concerns with the playground organizations that manage these public spaces. Additional partners in this project were specialized organizations whose primary task is to provide care and support to children and youth with special needs on the playground. Together these organizations built the foundation for diversified playgrounds whose impact can take care of all the stakeholders. What was the result? The playground organization incorporated inclusion in their training for volunteer animators, the specialized organizations learned more about the playgrounds' play methods and learning context, and parents could gain more trust in the playground spaces that are more attuned to their children's needs. 👉Find out more about it on our website: https://lnkd.in/enm5bEgT

Happy 4th of July! I want to emphasize the importance of civic engagement and personal empowerment, especially for business owners. It's crucial to remember that change often starts at the local level. By participating in city council meetings, volunteering for political campaigns, and educating ourselves and others, we can make meaningful contributions to our communities. Reflecting on how we can impact our city and state helps ensure that we leave a better legacy for future generations. It's a reminder that even small actions can collectively lead to significant improvements. When your organisation depends on a volunteer-led service, you spend a lot of time recruiting and training those volunteers. But because we pride ourselves on the way we look after our volunteers, they tend to stay a long time with us. Inevitably, there are some who come and go or, for whatever reason, reluctantly have to commit their time elsewhere and need to be replaced. Couple that, with extra demand for your service and the need for new volunteers increases. In most areas, this doesn't present too much of a problem but sometimes there are pockets of the country where we really struggle - and this is where we're asking for your direct help. If you have any connections in Wigan, Medway, Sandwell, Coventry, Durham, Wickford in Essex, Dartford or Durham we would really appreciate your help. Partnerships, relationships, and collaboration keep our powerful mission running to the neediest children in southwest Ohio. One of our most important partnerships is in our Socks 4 Success program. We give away at least 100,000 pairs of socks each year. Yes, you read that right—100,000. We see countless children each year who do not own even one pair or the socks they own are full of holes and threadbare. These children are miserable in cold, wet weather—we all know that feeling. We give those children several pairs of brand-new, warm, and cozy socks. The socks are as valuable as the shoes. Before this is possible, thousands of socks must be gathered and sorted. They must be removed from packages, tags, and plastic removed from each pair and then put in gender—and size-specific bins in preparation for being loaded into our trucks. This process must be repeated every week. This would be impossible without the work of two of our favorite partners, URS: United Rehabilitation Services and Kettering Fairmont Transitional Program. These groups come to our office each week, doing the work it takes to bring relief in the form of brand-new socks to thousands of children each year. We could not do it without them. Our staff and volunteer teams have the best seats in the house when it comes to seeing the goodness of people and experiencing the transformative power of serving. We bring relief.
