14 Chocolate Alternatives for a Tastier Future 🍫 Chocolate is an industry that is both a driver and a victim of climate change. While extreme weather events are slashing cocoa yields, high demand for cocoa leads to deforestation (to make room for cocoa farming) and biodiversity loss, which contributes to further warming. The globe is facing a 3rd deficit in a row leading to all-time low stocks (and consequently all-time high prices). “Traditional chocolate faces two economic challenges: a price increase of +300% compared to last year and the potential disappearance of 90% of plantations in Ghana and Ivory Coast by 2050 due to climate change”, Massimo Sabatini of Foreverland Food Fortunately for us choco-holics, startups are working to come up with chocolate alternatives that aren’t so… problematic. Thanks for tagging me. Great solutions mentioned in the article. It is important to note that plant cell culture and meat cell culture's scale up economics are very different. lower cap ex and media cost=faster impact while retaining benefits of real chocolate.
