Rio Tinto and Eramet, along with other companies, have submitted plans to develop lithium extraction technology in Chile’s salt flats, responding to a call from Enami. This initiative aims to choose the best approach for developing untouched salt flats in northern Chile, such as the “Salares Altoandinos” project in the Atacama region. This effort aligns with Chile’s goal of increasing local lithium production by 70% in a decade to meet the growing global demand for lithium, which is crucial for the energy transition and combating climate change. With lithium demand projected to quadruple by 2030, Chile’s role in lithium production is becoming increasingly significant for its competitiveness in the region and globally.

Since 2022, we have made commitments to the environment and society guided by the ESG pillars and solid, mature governance. Among our targets by 2030 is a 10% reduction in specific water consumption in the mining and metallurgy units, as well as an absolute reduction of scope 1 emissions by 20%, while maintaining Nexa's electricity matrix composed almost entirely of renewable sources. In pursuit of an increasingly diverse mining industry, we are also aiming for 30% women in the workforce and 30% women in leadership positions by the same year. In the communities where we operate, we are guided by building a positive and transparent legacy, with projects that foster the economy and development of the municipalities. 2023 saw several green initiatives come to life as a part of our Sustainable Mining Plan: ✅ Our Impact Finance Network, designed to mobilise third-party impact capital and support long-term development in our operational regions, saw us close deals worth $27.5 million, projected to support 13,000 livelihoods. ✅ We won awards throughout the year, including in the Sustainability category at Volkswagen’s Group Supplier Awards, cementing our #sustainability credentials. ✅ In Chile, we brought together stakeholders to explore the development of a Green Hydrogen Valley, or Hub (H2V), which could play a crucial role in reaching carbon neutrality by 2050. ✅ Our Hydraulic Dewatered Stacking (HDS) completed its initial test phase at El Soldado copper mine, paving the way for a reduction in our dependence on water at specific sites. After such an impressive year in the sustainability space, we’re looking forward to progressing throughout 2024 and striving to re-imagine mining to improve people’s lives.
