Memory Check: Exploring Cognitive Health Are you concerned about your memory, losing things, forgetting appointments or trouble coming up with words? Or maybe you are observing signs in a family member or friend. These could be signs of Mild Cognitive Impairment, or MCI. MCI is a condition that some older adults experience when they have more memory or thinking problems than other adults their age. The objective is to distinguish MCI from normal aging or dementia and to look for underlying causes that are potentially reversible. A good place to start an evaluation is with your regular doctor as he or she knows you and your medical history, and will complete a physical with blood work. A referral to a neurologist and a brain CT scan may possibly be part of the process. Seeking professional guidance is a key to nurturing cognitive well-being and savoring every moment of life. What are the signs of functional cognitive decline? Functional cognitive decline (FCD) includes memory or thinking problems that affect daily life. You might walk into a room and forget why you’re there, often lose things like your phone or keys, or struggle to remember a word. These signs can make people worry about Alzheimer's, but there are differences. With FCD, people can usually explain their memory issues in detail. In contrast, someone with Alzheimer's often doesn't realize they have problems and may deny it.
