Meet Rutvi. Rutvi is a graduate of Biomedical Research, living in Leith. Her studies had a focus on cancer and radiation. Rutvi is in £92,000 of debt due to her studies. She's yearning for "stability" - the word permeated our time with her. So much so that she's actively considering turning her back on her studies and entering the Aldi graduate scheme. There's nothing at all wrong with the Aldi graduate scheme - but shouldn't the brightest minds in the country that have studied cancer and radiation, be trying to cure cancer? The Higher Education system was a big part of our findings in the "What the fuck is going on? with the Heartland" project with Saatchi & Saatchi UK and Richard Huntington and team. Pancreatic Cancer UK Career Foundation Fellowships The Career Foundation Fellowships aim to provide early career researchers (clinical and non-clinical) with the opportunity to develop the skills and build experience needed to take the first step towards becoming an independent investigator. Deadline: 1pm, Tuesday 30th January 2024    Interdisciplinary Treatment Grants Applications for these awards will open on 1st February 2024 Pancreatic Cancer UK’s Interdisciplinary Treatment Grants aim to fund bold, pioneering collaborative projects that improve our understanding of how to effectively treat pancreatic cancer with a more integrated and holistic approach. To achieve this, the grants are designed to kick-start or formalise interdisciplinary collaborations, enabling researchers to work together from different disciplines to improve current treatments or find new therapeutic targets and approaches.  Discovery, applied (engineers, chemists, data scientist etc.) and/or clinical researchers are eligible to apply in collaboration for Interdisciplinary Treatment Grants.  These grants will provide successful applicants with up to £330,000 for a maximum of 3 years. https://lnkd.in/eHpP7gtY

Congratulations Marija Dinevska! awarded the ECR paper of the year - by Matrix Biology Society of Australia and New Zealand (MBSANZ) The study used Opal Polaris 7 Color multiplex-IHC from Akoya Biosciences, Inc. for cell spatial analysis. Key discoveries: 1/ immune cells, including cytotoxic T-cells, are sequestered in ECM-rich regions in brain tumors, most prominently in ECM-rich perivascular regions. 2/ Metastatic Brain Tumor ECM differs, compared with ECM in #glioblastoma #GBM. With this in mind, we are investigating ways to enhance anti-tumor immunity by mobilizing the 'ECM-trapped' immune cells. Drew University of Medicine and Science, the only Historically Black Graduate Institution west of the Mississippi River and one of only four Historically Black Medical Schools. Together, we will work together to create a more diverse workforce in specialized medicine through internships, curriculum, training, mentorships, joint research projects and more. "We know that more diverse representation is needed in cancer care and research,” said John Carpten, Ph.D., chief scientific officer, Irell & Manella Cancer Center Director's Distinguished Chair and Morgan & Helen Chu Director's Chair of the Beckman Research Institute at City of Hope. “We also know that there is important work to be done to close health equity gaps for people of color in the areas of early detection, clinical trials enrollment, treatment outcomes and more. That’s why we are honored to join together with Charles R. Drew University. WHAT WINS DID YOU CELEBRATE LAST WEEK? I asked our Pathology team what went well for them last week, and here are a few of their thoughts: ✅ Early completion of histology slides for one large study. ✅ A large quantity of materials was archived, which freed up storage space in our general Histology area. ✅ One team member persisted in a search and found something that we thought was lost. ✅ A fickle piece of lab equipment cooperated when it was most needed! ✅ Another pathologist provided “great slides” feedback to one of our senior histology technicians! ———————————————— WHY AM I SHARING THIS? I work in a fast-paced research environment, in which there’s a never-ending conveyer belt of work, with long days, tight deadlines, and unplanned extra stuff that throws a spanner into the works literally every day. I bet most of you can relate to much or all of this. It takes a dedicated team with their eye on the mission to come together and do their best to win the week. I’m privileged to be part of one such team. Every weekend, I like to reflect on the wins we had in our department during the past week. It’s easy to focus on the frustrations, the curveballs, or what you didn’t quite check off the To Do list. So I find that a little positive reframing is not just a good reminder of what went well, but also sets me up for a positive start to the new week. I try to remember to share some of these wins here, because it makes them seem more real.

Attended my first St. Jude Town Hall ✅ It’s hard to put into words the impact of today's lecture. Cancer affects each of us. We all have our own story. Whether it was a teacher, family member, classmate, coworker, or friend, this disease has the capability to steal those we love. As I sat in a room full of future pediatric oncologists, structural biologists, immunologists, psychologists, nurses, microbiologists, and neuroscientists, I started to feel small. For a single second, I thought, “As a media relations intern, how can I leave my mark when others my age are working to cure cancer?” I quickly remembered the mission of St. Jude: to lead the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. There is a keyword in that message that stuck out to me: understands. Without communication professionals, who would convey the amazing research of these incredible doctors? Without the photographers, how would people see the work of St. Jude? Without the writers, how could we share the findings that our researchers work tirelessly on? Without the strategic communications team, who would build the brand of the world-renowned St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which is recognized worldwide as a beacon of hope? Every effort counts. As someone with PR skills and the ability to write, a structural biology lab is not where I belong, and that is okay because someone is going to have to write to share the news that we are one step closer to finding a cure. Find where you belong. Find work that you’re passionate about. And find a way to change the world.
