I've been reflecting the past few days on the Race Table Talks session I attended on Saturday facilitated by Laurabel Mba Consulting. Most of us didn't know each other. We came together, as a group of white women, nervous yet eager to participate in a conversation that challenged our inner biases and opened our minds to the racism that persists within ourselves and our communities. Although uncomfortable at times, it was an incredible experience and I strongly recommend all white folx attend. I'm committed to continuing the work to make myself a better ally to the racialized people in my community. We are each born color blind, our stereotypes and biases are learned and deeply engrained. We cannot call ourselves DEI advocates, if we are not intentional about interrupting the cycle in ourselves, our workplaces and most importantly our children. Laurabel will tell you that her son is what inspired her to take on this work, she has inspired me to do better for my son. How do I react when a family member says something racist? I learned the questions to ask myself on if, when and how I should address this with them. What pre-conceived assumptions do I carry that are incorrect? I learned that being racist is not the worst thing. It is an opportunity for acknowledgment and learning, so that tomorrow I will do better. As a business leader, how do I ensure I am fostering a safe an inclusive workplace for our racialized team members? It requires intentional, consistent and continuous effort to make DEI an expected and demonstrable value of our organization. As the mother a Inuk child, I think often about the racism my child will face throughout his life. I will never fully understand his experience or be able to protect him from the injustices he will face. He is a different color than me, when people learn he is adopted, people most commonly say, "He is so lucky". They carry preconceived assumptions and biases about the life he might have had in his Inuit community. I carried them too before his adoption. I know now how wrong they are and am committed to advocating for the empowerment, fair treatment and reconciliation of Indigenous peoples. 🎙️ Insights from the National Stammering CEN: Part 2 💬 Stephen from @the_stutterverse shared his journey, where he embraced his stammer and found beauty in it over time. 🌟 He talked about the daily struggle of hiding his stammer, and how attending the Irish Stammering Association and a residential course for adults changed his perspective. Acceptance and change, he said, go hand in hand, and being around others who stammer is key to this journey. 🌍 2022 saw the launch of The Stutterverse where Stephen shares his journey and connects with others. His message is clear: stammering doesn’t need to be fixed, and you can be an excellent communicator while stammering. CONFLICT PREVENTION: HUMAN RIGHTS - THE RIGHT TO PLAY https://lnkd.in/g-sjyg85 We do not know how many conflicts are prevented or how many lives are saved when communities promote the right play to develop healthy youth. In countries where sports are connected to high-income earners and businesses that move large amounts of capital, the right to play has a different meaning. The right to play does not always help youth grow up healthy if professional competition is always the aim. Other societies that rob children of their childhood through #Childlabour or recruit them into guerrilla warfare, all these groups rob youth of their childhood and their right to play. Play is recreation. The new digital world, with gambling or other forms of entertainment, also robs youth of their right to play and to grow up healthy. We all need to revise the right to play in homes, places of education, and community centers. To play is peaceful! Young people are always willing to share what they know and learn more about what they know. Even during our downtime there is always a learning experience waiting to happen. What is in your community that grows in abundance? Have you looked at how you can value-add and create something new? Taking a walk with the young ones on the Mpolonjeni community was not only fun because we were out in nature. But because we got our hands dirty in a way that allows for us to look at what essential oil produce plants are in our communities. Trial and error are the most amazing way to experience. Zero waste means that every experiment leads to greatness.
