Sustainability and being enviromentally-friendly are 2 aspects of cycling which make it more appealing than driving a motor vehicle - Now the WBIA (World Bicycle Industry Association) wants to bring greater sustainability to bike production and distribution as a whole with the Sustainable Supply Chain project 🚲 As global bike and e-bike production increases, so will the need for the Industry to become more and more sustainable 🚲 Giant are already onboard with this initiative, as is CONEBI, but without a doubt it will take a great deal of effort from everyone across many companies and players in the Industry for it to truly work - Some panel discussions regarding education, energy, and eco-design were conducted at the recent Taipei Cycle Show, and others will be developed at Eurobike in July, with the official project due to begin in August, although it has been several years in the making 🚲 As well as environmental benefits, sustainable initiatives are also a business opportunity, whether customers are willing to pay more for 'greener' products, or because you might develop or deliver your products cheaper, there can also be a financial benefit, too 🚲 Possibly the most immediately pressing topic for those in Europe will be the implementation of EU regulations on e-bike batteries - if much of the production is taking part in, e.g. China, then working closely and ensuring standards are adhered to is going to be key for success - This is obviously a far-reaching initiative, get it done well and everyone can benefit... ================================= As a Business English coach and Bike fan, I regularly post on both topics. 3 done, 2 to go! I have this theory that all event and industry fair organisers have a secret What's App group to cluster everything throughout a few weeks and in the same months! For the past three weeks, it's been Go-Go-Go, in a good way! I started with a panel session at Mobility Makers, discussing the current investment landscape in mobility; continued with Micromobility Industries Europe; and reached half way last week at Hinterland of Things. Now we are on the way to MOVE London by Terrapinn and in two weeks our main cycling industry event of the year, the EUROBIKE Show starts. If you're around, let's catch up and schedule in a meeting! Different crowds, different focus, lots of learnings. I believe in terms of investment, mobility is struggling. Investments have dried up, investors are more cautious, the market slump after the Corona high paints a painful picture. However, the industry is in transition, there is a lot of opportunity for hard- and software startups to successfully solve a problem. Sustainability, regulation, digitalisation are driving companies to look for solutions. This is also reflected in this year's Eurobike program. That's why I am starting to assemble an overview of the data chain in cycling and micromobility, to give an overview of startups and established companies contributing to the digital and green transition of the sector. 🌍🚲 Exciting News from #VeloCity2024 in Ghent, Belgium! 🚲🌍 We are thrilled to share that Lucie Anderton CEnv, Head of Sustainability at UIC - International union of railways #UICrail, participated in the Velo-city conference held from June 18-21. Trains may not always take people door to door, but when paired with bicycles, they offer one of the most sustainable ways to travel. The #European project RAIL4CITIES, backed by Europe's Rail Joint Undertaking, has been conducting a series of Living Labs across Europe to explore how to create more seamless connections between trains and bikes, helping people enjoy more car-free days. Radio spots, press specials, newsletters, and much more are designed to inform the public and encourage them to cycle as much as possible! At KLM, we are committed to involving citizens from candidate cities (awaiting potential new adhesions): the more they participate by uploading their daily bike routes on the PisteCiclabili.com app, the greater the contribution to the maintenance we will support! 😊 Indeed, KLM's "Adotta una ciclabile" project aims to promote a healthier lifestyle and encourage urban mobility by covering the maintenance costs of bike lanes in Italian municipalities. In 2023, Naples was the first to secure funds for the maintenance of about 2 km of routes. EUROBIKE Show 2024 is here. We can see/feel all the buzz/expectation around. This 2024 edition should not be just another EUROBIKE Show. My take is that three main unprecedented facts hover over the scene: - Back on track. - Innovation. - New players. After some years of struggling, this industry seems ready to crank up. Not tomorrow, not easily, not for everyone, but facts are pointing out this. Resilience and commitment pushed the resisting companies to keep on innovating, creating, and pouring new things that we will see next week. Against all odds. I would not be loyal to my principles if I commonly used worn-out terms such as "recovery" and "light at the end of the tunnel", but they fit here really well. Big companies' reactions and novelties are expected, even from those not attending the show. For me, this remains secondary compared to the myriad of small companies', innovative products, and, listen to this, services. The new bike, now a social system, a key actor, and a shelter for talent and resources will prove in the EUROBIKE Show 2024 that the stiff approaches remain, but are fading away. You do not need a piece of huge machinery, hair-thin carbon fiber, or a one-thousand-store network, to be from the USofA or Europe to materialize your creativity, where available, in a Taiwanese company with its subsidiary Chinese factory. Today, a sparkling mind, with a computer, and/or limited manufacturing resources, but with an intelligent proposal attractive for modest funding can bring to life what the the new cycling demands in the face of big ships unable to turn effectively and quickly. We should expect improvements in what we know, and what we will need, and discover what we were not even able to imagine. My good Asian friends have learned the way well and they show the lead well trained silently within decades of OEM commissions. And India is warming up to prove that the power is not willing to remain still in Western pastures. This EUROBIKE Show is the vortex where the present and the future swirl to spin out a stubborn past that is out of this context where everything happens faster, and more violently than ever before. This year I expect more activity, appointments, pretzel & bratwurst than ever before.
