This year’s statistics confirm that the COVID-19 pandemic has permanently altered mobility patterns, with remote work reducing commuting and seeing overall fuel consumption down around 10% (since before 2020) as the ‘new normal’. The historically high fuel prices, seen first in 2022 and only partially falling in 2023, will have had an impact on levels of demand. However, with fuels still accounting for over 90% of transport energy use, fuel demand remained relatively inelastic across the year with demand rising by 1% from 2022 levels.
